On the tv news, two of the anchors rappelled down old changing scene as part of a fund raiser.  The rappelling was broadcast.  One of them said "there's a dead bird here."  I laughed.  He apparently found some falcon food storage!

I'm surprised they only found A dead bird!  Shocked

With the early arrival of warmer weather this year, migratory birds are back in the Lakes Region earlier than normal and have been busy finding the perfect place for their nest.

One curious robin in the area has found the perfect location for her young, which happens to be on a bird decoration of Gilford resident Tom Space's front porch.

Each season, Tom's wife JoEllen hangs a new decoration outside of their front door on the bare wall opposite the porch light. For the summer season, she hangs up a decoration that has two fake birds perched on a nest with two fake eggs with artificial leaves and greens encompassing the area below the nest.

It wasn't until a few weeks ago that Space realized a robin had made a home next to his own home since it was hidden within the porch decoration. Space stumbled upon the real bird's nest by accident when he was taking his dogs out for a walk one morning. When he opened the front door, a robin flew away from the house but stayed fairly close and did not turn away from the house.

This became a common occurrence when Space opened the front door, which led him to check out what was going on. He said he never really paid attention to the situation until the robin frequently began flying away from the house and then came back.

"Every time I opened the door, the robin would fly away," Space said. "I got curious one day and checked the basket out. When I did, I couldn't believe my eyes, at first I thought it was just more of the decoration. I studied it closer and sure enough there were real eggs."

When Space took a closer look at the decoration, he noticed that behind the fake nest and eggs was a real nest with four blue robin eggs huddled close together within the basket. He never saw the nest since it is placed down inside of the basket behind the fake nest.

"She keeps an eye on me, so I don't get too close," Space said. "She doesn't venture far from the nest, so if we do get too close she'll dive-bomb us."

Since the discovery of the robin's nest, Space and his wife have stopped using the front door so they won't disturb the eggs or the mother tending to them.

"The nest sits low enough that it hides the nest and the eggs, but you can see her head pop up here and there," Space said.

The American Robin is one of the species of birds to lay eggs during the season and can lay between three and five eggs per breeding season, which is between April and July.

He said other birds have made nests around his house, mainly in the gutters above the farmers porch.

"We have quite a few other birds in the area, but I'm not sure if they have made nests nearby," Space said. "We actually have a menagerie of wildlife in the backyard."

Birds commonly flying around his house include cardinals, blue jays and yellow finches. He said they have seen other animals prowling around, including fox, bobcats and even moose. Space said he will keep an eye out on the robins and will be awaiting their hatching sometime in the next few weeks.

Hi All

Working with the three different management groups and building owners, MNR and a host of other required services, partners and sponsors, press and media with regards to these three different dates to complete these four bandings.

As you might imagine, things are a little hectic and the likelihood is that we will miss someone with this e-mail communication.  Please don’t hesitate to pass this announcement along to other stakeholders involved as we are neck deep with the coordination and organization of these and other bandings events, also to include ongoing banding arrangements for Burlington and Windsor nest sites.

There is still the possibility of a Mt. Sinai Hospital hatch, Port Colborne hatch, William Osler hatch and one never knows what the Scarborough Yellow Pages birds will do.  All are still being closely monitored with ongoing communication with the various management groups at these nest sites.

Toronto downtown Sheraton Hotel nest site:

All has been arranged for May 28th, at 10AM banding.  Set up is a 9AM, with banding at 10AM.  Banding room has been booked and confirmed for the Pinnacle room, 43rd floor Penthouse with hotel management very excited.  (Press, TV and radio have been invited), along with special VIP guests from USA), along with MANY representatives from other CPF partners and sponsors , also including 11 representatives from five other Canadian federal government districts from across Canada – via our friends from Environmental Services / Public Works and Government Services Canada.  Should be a great day!

18 King Street nest site:

So far, all is going very well as we have 18 King Street management group is good for June 3rd at 10AM banding.  Window washing agency, swing stage and swing stage operators are available and have now been officially booked and confirmed for this date.   Media has also been invited.

Etobicoke Sun Life Centre – (Bloor & Islington) nest site:

Management group is once again very excited and planning their typical big event with invited guests and school groups and all is a β€œgo” with them and other stakeholders for June 4th banding at 10AM in the east tower ground floor lobby.  Window washing group has NOT YET confirmed but trying to work out the logistics of providing both the swing stage and operators for this banding at 10AM at the Sunlife Centre, AND same services for the afternoon out at the Mississauga Executive Centre – (MEC nest site).

Mississauga Executive Centre – (MEC nest site).

Management group also on board and agreed for a 2PM banding time once again to be conducted in the lobby of MEC building #1 (same venue as in past years).

Invited guests, and Mississauga news media have also confirmed their presence.

Once again, we are still waiting for Window washers to confirm this date and timeframe.

I will be back to ASAP as soon as we have a confirmation from Window washing regarding their service for MEC and Etob. Sunlife nest sites.

Sincerely

Mark Nash

HIII Bobbie...glad you made it safe. There are 2 chicks and that's it. The 3rd egg was discarded just like the one before. 2 is a good number for both A & B and the watchers. Have a good time in Rochester.

Has anyone else typed Kaver in today then had to fix it before posting?  I've done it at least 3 times today.

He gave us so many funny moments over the years, every funny moment today had his name written all over it.  I'm sure Archer will be just as good a Dad, but I still do miss Kaver...and Mariah... crying

Hey Ei...I do that all the time..type Mariah and Kaver in my post...Good thing for preview.  clap
