Private Residential update

star  May 13, 2010 - No idea on anything

I wish I had a more precise update but the reality is I don't know what's going on. Let me summarize all the things I don't know:

- We may, or may not have eggs on site (I believe we may)
- There may, or may not have been a hatch here (I haven't seen food deliveries so I suspect not)
- Milton has not been seen since Monday evening, and was last seen at Bloor/Islington
- The last observation of Milton involved a reference to him resembling a feather duster (ie. frazzled)
- Milton is in a molting phase which explains part of his appearance
- Jack is tending to both our nest and the Bloor/Islington nest, and on guard for intruders/Milton

A few weeks ago, based on what I knew at the time, I prepared a forecast of the nesting season. This was based on when I believed incubation had begun, and was guesswork at best.

I cannot visually confirm anything, but it does appear that my original estimate for a hatch has now passed. This may mean there are young up there, it may mean incubation started later than I thought, or, since I haven't visually confirmed the presense of any eggs, it could mean Jack and Mom are playing house with an empty nest.

This update couldn't be more ambiguous. Welcome to the world of blind nest monitoring, it's fun for the whole family! Until something changes this is all I know.

The male falcon that we’ve been seeing recently was inside the nestbox early this morning!  They were then seen flying around together and he was perched on the ledge of the nestbox while she was inside.  They’ve been doing a lot of conversing with each other and we think they’ve been doing some courtship bowing to each other.   This is all very encouraging!  We still might get some chicks this season after all!!!

Here is a picture of the female and the male in the nestbox this morning. The eggs will be removed from the nest on Friday.  Let’s keep our fingers crossed that we get some new eggs to replace them!

The male falcon wasn’t seen inside the nestbox today but he was seen perched on the ledge of the nestbox, on the ledge of the building and also flying around with the female.  I think he’s planning on sticking around!  This is going to be very interesting to see what develops in the days to come!!!

21613  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Don’t mess with this mama sandhill crane at Tatum Ridge! (Fla) on: 14-May-10, 06:31:24 AM
The signs at Tatum Ridge Golf Course off Fruitville Road provide a clear warning for golfers to watch out when they head over to the No. 10 tee.

There, less than 10 feet from the cart path, hole marker and ball washer at No. 10, sits a patient and proud yet determined mother who does not take kindly to strangers. She’s a 5-foot-tall sandhill crane, and she’s sitting on eggs right there next to the teeing ground.

The course put up the warning signs because while sandhill cranes — known for their thin long legs, bright red-topped heads, and casual approach to humans — can turn nasty if their nests are messed with.

And she’s just so close to the tee box that any curious golfer could make a wrong move and end up attacked by a bird that has a long pointed beak and can dance up to 15 feet in the air while mating or when in danger.

Tatum Ridge officials posted signs like this to warn golfers to stay away from a nesting mother sandhill crane.

Once again, it goes to show how golf courses, golfers and nature can, and often do, all get along peacefully and with mutual respect.

The course and its players will be lucky in a few weeks because there are few things cuter than baby sandhill cranes, that start off like fluffy little brown tennis balls with legs but soon grow into taller fluffy brown babies that follow their mother everywhere.
