22022  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Owl recovering after collision with Wentzville firetruck (MO) on: 30-Apr-10, 06:11:02 AM

A barred owl that flew directly into the path of a Wentzville firetruck heading to a fire last week is recovering at the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park.

The owl flew into the windshield of a Wentzville Fire Protection District truck heading to last Thursday morning’s fire at 66 Abby Kate Lane near Wentzville, said Battalion Chief Michael Scott.

Firefighters were startled when the owl struck the windshield along Highway W, a couple miles from the fire, Scott said. They realized a bird had hit the truck but kept heading to the 3:30 a.m. fire that destroyed the home.

When firefighters arrived at the blaze, they noticed the owl clinging to the roof of the truck, Scott said. It had been injured but was still alive. Firefighters took the owl to the sanctuary, where it had surgery to repair a damaged wing.

Walter Crawford, director and founder of the sanctuary, said the owl is recovering and should be able to return to its habitat in four to six weeks.

Crawford said bird-vehicle collisions are a common cause of bird injuries.

The fire is still under investigation.

MISSION - It was an attempted getaway. Authorities say a white van was filled with illegal immigrants.

"The van looked suspicious.  But when he noticed the agents, he went ahead and pulled over and about 15 subjects bailed from the vehicle," said Joe Trevino, a Border Patrol agent.

Agents searched a patch of woods located along Military Highway, near Bryan Road in Mission. Fifteen people were arrested. The driver got away.

It's a definite change of pace for some nearby bird-watchers.  They caught some of the action.

Roger Zachary witnessed the incident.  He and his wife, Ruth, are from California.

"We did notice the helicopter.  We didn't know what was going on.  We saw another van," said Zachary.

"There is no set time for these incidents to happen; there really is not a clock to determine when it happens.  That's one of the points we try to make.  Our agents are ready for it all the time," said Trevino.

The Zacharys are spending six weeks along the U.S.-Mexico border.

"Typically, when we're birding in a more reclusive area where bad people go, law enforcement come and check on us," said Ruth Zachary.

The Zacharys are working all the way down to South Padre Island.  They expect to catch more action along the way.

I was up most of the night watching CNN and how awful this will be for the food chain. How devastating for nesting birds....dolphins, whales and just about everything....and they can't FIX it YET! May take weeks or even months to cap it. On a slightly lighter note...wildlife enthusiasts are prepared for what's about to happen.  crying

Doug Garbutt Reports:

As reported, in late March there were 4 eggs here which have mysteriously gone missing. Well I think it was because a 3rd falcon showed up & caused a trauma smash or the residents here destroyed the eggs, I’m just guessing.  However, yesterday the new female laid her 1st egg. She is taking good care of it & the male is bringing in food for her. We are hoping that there will be more eggs & that they are viable. It’s late in the season but hopefully it will work out ok.

I guess the resident female is gone!  crying

22035  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Osprey using new nesting site along Bow (Canada) on: 29-Apr-10, 09:41:40 PM
Ospreys have taken up residence at a new home built for them along the Bow River in Calgary just 12 days after it was constructed.

The city set up the nesting site for the birds earlier this month to replace the perch the birds used last season.

Last November, a wooden pole, which held floodlights in the Broadview Athletic Park soccer, was blown onto two vehicles during a windstorm. That's when city officials discovered that other poles were rotten and had to be removed, ruining the osprey's perch.

The city stored the material for the osprey nest over the winter and reassembled it on a new 18-metre high platform on the north side of the river — just east of Crowchild Trail — in the hopes the birds of prey would return.
"We're very pleased to see the osprey pole in use in such a short time after installation. If they choose this as their nesting spot, the osprey will be building the nest and laying eggs in the next couple of weeks," said Julie Guimond, a wetland biologist with the city.

The ospreys' return to the banks of the Bow is a good sign for the health of the river, she added, because it suggests they are finding enough fish to eat.

TERA Environmental Consultants donated the money to erect the birds' new home.

"We're very happy that we were able to work cooperatively with the City of Calgary and Enmax to provide the osprey with a nest to return to," said Lois Pittaway, a senior wildlife biologist with TERA.
