Chinese takeaway container becomes bird nest

An old chinese takeaway container has provided the ideal home for a family of swifts in Nottingham after their nest collapsed.

When the birds fell to the ground last week, quick thinking Vivienne and her husband scooped the chicks up, fixed the plastic box to the wall and popped them in.

A week on and they look do be doing ok, as you can see.

The Real PIP Ostrich Page - Tuesday day 45: "The other eggs are gone. Gunga is healthy.
After a night in the incubator, and candling today there was no progress with the three eggs. No movement has been observed for days.
I spoke with Kind Rancher Joel, and we decided to proceed with opening the other 3 eggs. None were alive, they had stopped developing. . Kind Rancher has been having problems this year too. None of these would have survived in nature, and Gunga is a little miracle
Kind Rancher has chicks the same age so I will take Gunga to them so she can be in her new environment and with family and friends as soon as possible. As you know ostriches cannot survive alone, they fail to thrive without a social contact.
Gunga will join Aries when she gets bigger.
I am disappointed of course, but it’s OK, we did our best with these eggs. I do not think going in earlier would have improved the outcome, there was something wrong.
I am happy for Gunga. Thanks for all your kinds words, and my daughter thanks so many of you for buying and enjoying her Pip the Ostrich book.
I will give another update tonight. Here is a photo of Gunga this morning. She looks great."

2015 Falcon Watch: Yesterday, the two remaining female chicks, who have been in rehab, were released by Fontenelle Forest's Raptor Recovery from the roof of WoodmenLife Tower. Penelope was successfully released and immediately took flight. However, Charlotte did not, and will be taken back to the Raptor Recovery for additional rehab. While we were on the roof, we also saw Charity (mom), who landed on the roof when she heard Charlotte squawking.

Considering the peregrine, who are we to think we belong in the air? / MIKE COSPER
2235  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Re: Salt Lake City peregrine cam on: 24-Jul-15, 08:22:11 PM
It is with real regret that we must report that the adult, female peregrine falcon retrieved from the ground on March 29 was recently euthanized. Although the bird (believed to be the female, adult of the peregrine pair that has successfully nested upon the Joseph Smith Memorial Building as far back as at least 2011) made some improvement as a result of treatment for a respiratory ailment, she was rather quickly determined to be blind in one eye and, with time, suffered problems with the second eye as well. Sometime during the week of July 12, it was determined that continued treatment would be excruciatingly painful and frightening to her and the difficult decision was made by an expert rehabilitator to humanely put her down.

We'll never know to what extent her age may have contributed to her demise, but affliction of wild, healthy birds with aspergillosis not thought to be common. Maybe her age contributed to a weakened condition which allowed this fungal respiratory disease to ultimately take her life. While we're all sad about the outcome, as mere mortals, all we (who have come to love these birds) can do is look to future and the 2016 nesting season.

RIP, sweet thing. Oh how you have thrilled and captivated us through the years.

How sad for her! Fly free!
