22426  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Re: Travelers Tower - Hartford, Connecticut on: 15-Apr-10, 06:55:19 PM
I just checked the Travelers Tower cam in Hartford, Connecticut and there appears to be a pair of falcons incubating eggs.  Does anyone know who the falcons are and how many eggs they are incubating?

Thanks,
Lisa McK

First Response

Hi Ms. cook:

Your e-mail was forwarded to me by the DEP Webmaster on 4/12/10.  I have not had time to study the birds from the falcon cam, so I can’t tell you if it’s the same bird.  The first egg must have been laid on Sunday 4/11.  DEP doesn’t maintain the website it is maintained by Travelers Insurance and the Children’s Museum.
(um no, the egg was laid before that) and I wrote back to tell them!

second response

Hi Donna:

I am the person at DEP that tracks this.  Thank you for your observations.  You may e-mail me at anytime.

3rd response:

The nest is on the Travelers tower in Hartford and they are the ones who update the information.  We had heard and looked at the falcon.cam at the Travelers and were excited to see the egg and then, later, Amelia sitting on it.  There is often a day or more between eggs.  Yes, everyone cares about the falcons…I have already received several notes from excited viewers…one who had captured a night visit from Amelia to the nest!  We do not know who does the updates at the Travelers.

Amelia???? Where have they been? Unless she came back, these 2 are probably the same ones from last season.

So after 3 responses, I think I know more than them...and they still won't update the page! W/E   silly

This certainly got my attention when I saw she had flown all the way to Oregon! Shocked
But I'm guessing Portland, Maine is more likely. Wink

Me too, just looking and said WHAT????

A newly arrived Hermit Thrush was giving calls in the evening, here in NH, last night. We get lots of Hermit Thrushes, both migrating through and nesting, because we have the wooded habitat they like. The reddish tail of the Hermit Thrush is a great ID clue and helpful in telling it apart from other thrushes.
The songs of thrushes are one of the more beautiful bird sounds. Sometimes we will be serenaded in the evenings here by several Hermit Thrushes singing on territories, as well as a Wood Thrush. Hermit Thrushes breed in the Northeast, upper parts of the Midwest, much of the West and Canada. They winter along the Pacific Coast and much of the southern part of the country.

Hermit Thrush arrival yesterday, we love it's song.

Incubation on track!
Well, it seems that Scout is now focused on incubation. It is possible there could be another egg, but four is the normal clutch size. We were able to get a better look at the egg laid yesterday and it appears to be intact, just lacking pigment on both ends. It's likely just a "cosmetic defect" and the egg should develop normally.

What to expect during incubation...? For the most part it will be watching a bird sit on rocks - basically, one of the adults will be on the eggs almost 24/7 for the next +/-33 days to keep them at a consistent temperature for development of the embryo. In general, not too dramatic! Scout will assume most of the incuation duty, while Trooper's role is to provide her food and take her place on the eggs while she eats.

However, we can expect some variation in the action: combine a south-facing ledge with unusually warm temperatures and there will be times, especially on bright sunny days, that Scout won't be as tight on the eggs, in fact, she may even shade them. This is to prevent the eggs from being too warm. In past years she has rolled them to a different location within the box and then back to the main scrape. So, there will be some different behaviors to watch for over the next several weeks.

We're currently locked out if the camera's computer and can't remotely log in. It may require a visit to the site to manually reset it.

Be careful up there! Shocked
