Haha, Donna! Those Crafty Critters nearly had me! As I am here (again... still!) - another question. Since both A&B are sitting, does this mean egg-laying is over and they are incubating? If they are, it might be no bad thing if they don't have loads a kids this year... Yes? No? Maybe so??

I don't think she's done yet Bobbie...today will tell...KEEP WATCHING!   wave

22582  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Fox kills 16 flamingos in Finland on: 10-Apr-10, 06:49:48 AM
A fox has broken into a zoo in Finland and killed an entire flock of 16 flamingos, officials at the zoo say.

The fox climbed over a fence at the Helsinki zoo to get into the flamingo pen overnight.

The zoo is on an island in the Finnish capital and the fox had apparently walked over ice to reach it.

An investigation was under way as to why the flamingos - which were normally brought inside overnight because of the cold - had been left out.

The zoo has 150 animal species and nearly 1,000 plant species.

How awful!

Found this too from 2007:

Four flamingos housed at Frankfurt zoo in Germany have been killed in an apparent attack by an intruder.

Three of the birds' heads had been torn from their bodies and a fourth bird had been strangled, zoo officials said.

"We cannot explain why someone would want to murder flamingos," spokeswoman Caroline Liefke told Reuters news agency. "It's a complete mystery."

Police are investigating the attack, which took place inside the flamingo enclosure after the zoo had closed.

Frankfurt zoo counts several flamingos in its collection, as well as larger animals such as lions, giraffes and numerous exotic birds and reptiles.
22583  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / First osprey egg to be laid this year falls from nest (UK) on: 10-Apr-10, 06:45:22 AM

Ospreys have been nesting in the area for more than 15 years

Hopes for the arrival of a new osprey chick in Tweed Valley suffered a setback after the first egg to be laid went missing.

Experts found an egg, thought to be the first in the UK this year, had been laid by the ospreys on Monday.

It is believed high winds may have contributed to the egg falling from the nest.

However Diane Bennett, of the Tweed Valley Osprey Project, said there were signs the female had laid again.

She said the birds had built up loose nesting material which, combined with high winds, may have resulted in the egg ending up at the edge of the nest.

Stronger nest

"We think the parents then tried to roll the egg back into position but failed to do so," she added.

"The good news is of course that we think that the female has laid again and that ospreys have continued to build up the nest further and it looks much stronger."

The Tweed Valley Osprey Project is run in conjunction with RSPB Scotland and Forestry Commission Scotland.

Ospreys have been nesting in the area for more than 15 years.

So sad but hopefully more eggs.

Beauty is back. Oh, and Bobbie, Beauty has a buff colored breast where Archer's chest is pure white.

Having finally come to terms with IDing M&K, I must begin again with B&A - and hints for this? I can ID them when shown together, but not when going solo... Ta!

Bobbie, this is Archer...see the white spot on his wing...a tell-tail er (wing) sign. Also, he has a white Cere, see it above his beak? Beauty has a darker head and no white Cere. Hope this helps

BUFFALO, NY - A new University at Buffalo Web camera is letting viewers get an up close peek at a Peregrine Falcon family perched high above at the college's South Campus.

The nest was custom-made and installed by UB staff last year with help from the New York State DEC and the Buffalo Audubon Society. It's located in the tower of the college's Mackay Heating Plant. It's the second straight year a female has laid her eggs there.

The "falcon-cam" has taken on increased importance for bird lovers since a similar camera at the Statler went dark last month when the historic building was mothballed.

Local bird watchers say they're sure the momma peregrine is "BB", the same female who laid eggs in the tower last spring. However, "Smokey", last year's poppa, has been replaced by "Yankee".

Al Gilewicz, UB's assistant director of utility operations, says Smokey was driven off following a fight with BB and Yankee. That altercation resulted in one of the three eggs in the nest being broken. Shortly after though, the falcon-cam recorded BB laying another egg, bringing the total back to three.

I've been getting this a lot today also. 10 or more frames in a row. Main cam mostly.

We're having some intermittent problems communicating with the camera.  Kenn's channeling his inner Bloodhound and he's tracking it down...

Thank you Jim and FalKenn.
