NEWS: Yea! First pic shows the UB eyasses now safely ensconced at Hawk Creek with Blaze, who is fostering the chicks. There are two boys and a girl. One non-viable egg left in the box was taken by the DEC for examination. Initially there had been a fifth egg but it was no longer in the nest box. It could have hatched but not lived, or been discarded by Dixie.
Next two pix taken the next day show Dixie and the last pic is Yankee. They will not abandon the site.
UB initially wanted to start the restoration work on the smokestack sooner, but working with the DEC allowed for the chicks to reach banding age with the parents. The DEC arranged with Hawk Creek to raise the chicks and get them to the point of being able to survive on their own. Nothing was done spur-of-the-moment, but was figured out and well planned in advance.
Although this move is upsetting to some, it was a necessary for the historic tower to be repaired. That is a big job which can only be done in the summer here in Buffalo. The other alternative was to cover the tower or make the nest box unavailable for this year, but no one wanted that.
Please, understand and accept what is without giving negative feedback, what was worked out and done as the best option for the Peregrines. Negativity such as we've seen before, directed here and at the DEC, provide nothing positive so please vent elsewhere. smile emoticon Negative posts, texts, calls or emails will be deleted.
We will provide follow-up news and pix.

I've been limited to using just one hand since the shoulder surgery five weeks ago which has slowed me down a bit, but it's getting better.

NESTBOX NEWS
May 11
This will likely be the last entry of Nestbox News for the 2015 nesting season. It's bittersweet to write. All in all I think it was good, albeit a short season. From the moment we set foot on the rooftop on March 4th we had a feeling the old pair was gone. It was likely a battle ensued and the new pair has claimed the precious eyrie atop 101 Hudson St. We got to witness and hear courtship displays but no eggs were ever laid. It's now too late for the pair to nest and raise young. Most other falcon nests in New Jersey are all just starting to hatch. With that said, we will be canceling the internet at the end of May, that we use to stream the cam, since it is expensive for us to maintain. We hope to see you back here for another season in 2016 to (hopefully) watch the new pair raise a brood of falcons for the first time! We'd like to thank everyone who watches and supports the Falcon Cam. --Ben

As we all watch and wait we wonder, will the new pair breed this year? We have some knowledgeable insight from Kathy:
"There's still hope. We've seen females attempt to nest as 2 year olds when they may hatch one or not. This female is a 3 year old (technically, she's in her 4th year counting 2012), so she is mature to nest. We don't know the male's age but he has adult plumage. They're still doing a lot of courtship, which solidifies their relationship. He brought her prey just yesterday after one of those vocal sessions. We probably have another couple of weeks before I'd say it's not going to happen."
We learned a bit more information about the new female, 41/AX in the past few days. Like others, she's a New York bird turned Jersey girl. She originated from a nest near the Bayonne Bridge in 2012. You know how we feel about naming birds...but she was named "Juliette" when she was banded by Chris Nadereski, NY DEP. Her and her nest mate (a male) were given names "that were inspired by their birthplace," according to a Port Authority spokeman. Juliette for Bayonne's Juliet St., which passes under the bridge.
In the past the falcons nested on the Bayonne Bridge, which can be treacherous for young fledgling falcons that sometimes fall onto the busy roadway below. Instead, the Port Authority built a new platform for the nesting falcons. Kudos to everyone who moved the nest and gave these wonderful birds a chance to survive in the urban environment, where many natural wonders are un-noticed by many.

(Oh well), sad!

This week in Spain...
This beautiful basking shark was found dead on the beach.  Sad

Cause of death... Entanglement from fishing debris.

Please, if you eat seafood make sure it comes from your local artisan fisherman. Not from a long liner or a super trawler. They are the ones destroying the the ocean from the sea floor to the surface!

Once again, a male named "Younger" has successfully produced live chicks at two sites, with 2 different females, about a city block apart in distance in downtown Minneapolis, MN. There is about 5-7 day age difference between the two broods: 4 chicks at one site and 3 at the other. To our knowledge, Younger is the only documented, successful bigamous paired male in the region.    whistle

Great names you guys selected.  What color tape does Genesee have?  I got Cadence = blue, and Bronx = red.  Did not see where the color/numbers were noted.

No tape on Genesee.

It's too bad they didn't have a chick they could foster with her in case they have to keep the little and send her into care.  She's been so devoted to this baby, it's been wonderful to watch.  I see now where Beauty gets her good mothering skills from  wub2

I wish they could do that also, give her a foster.  Sad
