Ultralight-led Whooping Cranes Arrive at First Wintering Destination in Florida! January 14, 2010 Ten of the 20 “Class of 2009” ultralight-led Whooping Cranes arrived yesterday at their wintering grounds at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Wakulla County, Florida. The other 10 cranes will continue their migration behind Operation Migration’s ultralights to the birds’ final destination at the Chassahowitzka NWR in Citrus County, Florida.
This is the second year the cranes have wintered at two separate locations. The decision to split the flock came after the loss in February 2007 of 17 of the 18 Class of 2006 Whooping Cranes in a severe storm at Chassahowitzka NWR. The Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP) hopes the two wintering locations will help reduce the risk of another catastrophic loss.
So glad they finally made it....was a rough few months for them.

What a nice clear pic....Thank you all involved with this project.
Is the refresh still 5 minutes? My PC is running so slow right now, it's hard to tell.
The picture on the Main Camera View page still refreshes every 3 minutes. The camera takes a picture every 1-3 minutes during daylight hours. OK thanks Shaky.

I have been privileged to see Arctic terns on several occasions in Alaska. Here are several resting on a baby berg! It boggled my mind to know that just a few weeks prior, those same birds had been resting on the ice of Antarctica!

Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / (NO PICS)... hawk story
|

So I left my house at 2:45 to go babysit. I hear this crow cawing very loud and constant. I look up and right over my head is a Hawk being harassed by a small crow. YES....I got my camera out and believe it or not...I WAS ALL BUTTER FINGERS!!! I couldn't even turn the camera on I was so awestruck by what I saw. I swear, I couldn't function, (I'd be a bad birder). I just watched as this small black crow kept dive-bombing this hawk...not a redtail but a very light colored hawk from underneath, almost a whiteish/gray. This crow did not give up until the hawk was out of his territory and by that time, they were little specks in the sky. I watched for a few more seconds and all of a sudden, I see the crow come back, obviously all proud of himself. I get too excited when I see a hawk and I'm so mad at myself for not getting the camera on in time. I'm having a lot of firsts lately and I'm overwhelmed.
