Rehabilitated Falcon Released
A peregrine falcon was released back into the wild Monday in Lycoming County. Two sisters are credited with rescuing the falcon last week.

The bird is alive thanks to their quick thinking and some help from a rescue clinic.

The peregrine falcon was nearly a goner almost one week ago. Now Lucky is healthy again, ready to leave the game commission headquarters near Jersey Shore.

Kristina Franklin of the Big Woods Wildlife Rescue Clinic cared for the eight-year-old female after it was injured on the highway in Williamsport.

"It had a head injury, an eye injury and an abrasion on the wing. She just happened to be very strong-willed oriented so therefore she healed quicker," Franklin said.

Lucky's comeback might never have happened if it hadn't been for Marylee and Justina Laird, sisters who were in the right place at the right time.

"I realized it was alive. It started flapping its wings so I turned around and came back," said Marylee Laird.

The Laird sisters came upon the injured falcon on a stretch of Route 220 in Williamsport near the Market Street exit. It was in the middle of the highway. They rushed out into traffic and saved the falcon's life. Now it's free again in the wild.

"We were on the brim of the highway, 30 people are passing and hitting it as we're waiting to get this bird," Marylee Laird recalled.

"I didn't care. I knew she needed help and that's all I cared about," added Justina Laird.

The sisters looked on Monday as Franklin let Lucky go, watching proudly as the falcon flew for the first time since they rescued it.

"That felt unbelievable. I loved it. It was," Justina Laird said.

"It's good. I'm glad she's back in the wild but I'm definitely. Now I don't know what she's going to be doing. I'm going to worry," Marylee Laird said.

24013  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Steady diet of road kill helps great horned owl rehabilitate at Waterman center on: 11-Jan-10, 07:54:44 AM
APALACHIN -- At first, the great horned owl didn't seem much interested in being returned to the wild. As more than 40 people watched, the owl clacked its beak and held fast to his perch at Waterman Conservation Education Center, before finally flying to freedom on a chilly Sunday.

The great horned owl, likely injured by an automobile, was found lying in a pasture in Vestal in August.

"He tried to fly, but couldn't," said Owego-based animal rehabilitator Carole LaPlante who took in the raptor before handing her over to Waterman a month later.

While taking care of the owl, LaPlante said, she fed it carrion.

"I picked up a lot of road kill," she said.

The owl, with a 4-foot wingspan, is about nine months old, said Scott MacDonald executive director of Waterman.

Prior to freeing the horned owl, MacDonald introduced the crowd to permanent Waterman raptor residents, a barn owl and red-tailed hawk. As children gave their rapt attention, the director discussed the diet, attributes and habits of birds of prey, including the largest in the world, the Andean condor.

The great horned owl, MacDonald said, is the most aggressive bird in New York and he's hoping the one he set free will make a home in Waterman's woods.

"There's a lot of animals for her to eat," he said. "I'm hoping she'll stay."

Once the owl was released, a nearby flock of crows made a ruckus that lasted several minutes. Amateur owl expert Sean Kopacko, 11, said he thinks she'll be fine, though there are always dangers in the wild.

"Being an owl and being out in daylight is a bad thing," he said. "There's always a chance of mobbing."

Mobbing, he explained, is what the crows were trying to do. While one crow alone isn't much of a problem, when they get together, they can give a great horned owl a run for its money, said Kopakco, of Apalachin.

"They're a force to be reckoned with in numbers," he said.
24014  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Keep your eye on the birdie on: 11-Jan-10, 07:41:55 AM
A tree face on Annette Roeckers' live oak seems to have eyes for this pileated woodpecker.

Where is it? At 6701 Hartland St., south Fort Myers.

Details: Did someone say, "Watch the birdie?"

"(It) seemed fascinated with the eye of our tree face," Annette wrote. "The tree face was a gift from our kids. (No I didn't make it!) We also enjoy watching the squirrels racing round and round this tree and stopping to look at the eyes."

My brother in law has the same face on his Oak tree.

Subject: Allen's Hummingbird update
From: Blair Nikula <odenews AT odenews.org>
Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2010 13:16:20 -0500

I just received a call from Christine Omar, the homeowner hosting the
Allen's Hummingbird in Harwich.  As Tom Prince has reported (through
Barbara Volkle), the hummingbird was discovered to be in distress
this morning.  It turned out that some of the sugar water from the
feeder had frozen onto one wing and it apparently could not
fly.  Fortunately, this happened while it was at the feeder,
otherwise it likely would have expired by now.  The bird was brought
inside, then taken to Wild Care in Orleans where it is currently
being treated.  What eventually will happen to it has yet to be
determined, but for the time being at least, it is not viewable.  I
will post an update as more info becomes available.

Poor thing...hope it's OK  crying Unbelievable weather the US is having.
