A surprise Christmas visitor makes for an interesting day.

On Christmas morning, the sun was shining as I sleepwalked into the kitchen to make coffee. I glanced out the window, and what should my wondering eyes behold but a hawk sitting on the grass in our yard. I yelled for my husband, an avid birder (that's a birdwatcher), who came running in from the bedroom where he had been about to take a shower. And I do mean "about" -- picture him peering through the kitchen window wearing nothing but a pair of expensive binoculars.

"It's a Cooper's hawk!" he cried.

It is highly unusual for a hawk to sit in the grass for any length of time -- they're fast fliers and hard-chargers -- and our hawk just sat and sat. The husband donned his gray sweats and got within two feet of the wild and treacherous creature. The bird managed only a feeble wing flutter and head shake. We knew it was in trouble.

Finding a bird rescue organization on Christmas morning is a challenge. We started with Animal Control (not there), the police (not their jurisdiction), Natural Resources (which gave us some phone numbers to try). For four hours, I was on the Internet and my husband on the phone, trying to locate someone who would help our apparently injured bird.

Now, Christmas at our house is traditionally a gift-opening bash and brunch with whatever children, their spouses and children's children might be in the area. This year, no one was coming to see us, and I was a tad bereft as I started the day. And having my husband wrapped up (so to speak) in this wild thing in our yard didn't help. As the morning wore on, the darned bird was getting a heck of a lot more attention than I was. Finally, around noon, the helpmate agreed that we could open our gifts. But first, ladies and gentlemen, we must move the hawk into our garage, the better to protect him and our neighbors' dogs.

In case you didn't know, here's how to move a hawk from your yard to your garage:

You find a box. Then you find a towel or blanket with which to cover the bird. Then you must argue about whether to use a dirty car towel or a pristine one. Then the husband, with the gleam of virtuous purpose in his eyes, must march the towel over to the bird, throw it over said bird, then pick up and carry the creature to the box being held open by the nervous and skeptical wife.

So at last, while the bird rested comfortably on a clean white towel in a cardboard box held closed by masking tape in our garage, we opened our gifts, knowing all the while that there was a distinct possibility that a Cooper's hawk might be flying around our garage and pooping on my Volvo.

Gifts done, our attention veered back to Claus, our Christmas bird (yes, we named him). About one o'clock, a generous rescuer in north-central Maryland eventually found us an equally generous person in our area who could take him. The 10-minute ride was interesting, with me driving very slowly while my husband held the box of hawk.

Once we arrived at the animal sanctuary, with its field full of unwanted emu and peacocks, Sandi the sainted rescue lady took one look at Claus and declared that yes, he had probably suffered a concussion after "boinking" himself on our house. He would likely be okay after a couple of days of rest in a protected environment.

Christmas gifts do come in unexpected packages. On a Christmas morning when we expected to be alone, we had a visitor after all. He didn't come bearing brightly wrapped gifts that we likely didn't need, but he brought us something else. The husband got to pick up a hawk (too cool) and take it to a safe place where it can recover to soar and attack smaller birds yet another day. I got to see my husband nude with binoculars.  scared blue

Here is some remarkable footage from somewhere in the Amazon (Peru?) of a Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Campephilus melanoleucos, taking on a "Giant bird snake" or "puffing snake", Pseustes sulphureus, that has raided its nest and swallowed its eggs.

Oh boy, someone just had to send me this!!   Sad

Holland, MI —

Peregrine falcons lingering along the lakeshore have birders and biologists wondering if the part-time residents will again remain in Michigan for the winter.

“Peregrine falcons are migratory birds,” said Nik Kalejs, senior wildlife biologist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. “Typically, they follow other bird species southward when the weather turns colder. These West Michigan birds stuck around last season and seem to want to remain in the area this year, too.”

Last winter, a pair of peregrines remained all season at the J.H. Campbell Complex in Port Sheldon Township, where an artificial nest placed by employees 200-feet up on an emissions stack has been attracting the birds seasonally for eight years. The nest yielded two peregrine chicks this year, with one of the juveniles sharing the territory with its parents well into the fall, another unusual behavior for the highly territorial species.  (READ ON) Pics too

Happy *Day after Christmas to you too Shaky*

Hope everyone had a great time yesterday with family and friends. Wow, the day went quick. What was your best gift? Mine was seeing the ~~~ Christmas Hawk ~~~ in my backyard. We spent the day with Ed's brother and his family, my mom came too, (she's up from Fla and is not liking our weather). Today we have Christmas with my side of the family. Ed gave me a new camera with a better Zoom, so now maybe I can get better close-ups of the birds outside. Enjoy your   all.

p.s. although I enjoyed my hawk yesterday, I know it's an invitation for a free meal, so I'll not fill my seed feeder for a day or 2. My suet feeder will do for now. Seeds draw way too many birds.    hawk

What a surprise for me this am. Was watching the birds at my feeder, (there were none)when............I noticed something big on the branch. Well here he is. It was more speckled than red, so I don't think it was a Redtail hawk. He was squawking.

Maybe Cooper? I don't care what it was but it sure scared the birds at my feeder. The hawk was screaming..I have it on video, just have to upload it. I was very shaky while video-ing it. Was so excited to see my Christmas hawk.    christree hawk

Linda Grounds Out in Panama
I received a telephone call from Panama on Wednesday night informing me that Linda had been seen "falling out of the sky" and onto a road in front of a tavern in the town of Pedasi on the Aguero Peninsula of Panama.

She was alive and had been taken to a large animal veterinarian who was keeping her quiet and feeding her. The reports on the cause(s) of her coming to ground were inconclusive.

I contacted Guido Berguido, one of our new friends in Panama (he is the owner of Advantage Tours Panama, a famous bird tour company, www.advantagepanama.com), and let him know about the falcon. She is currently located about 5 hours north of Panama City and Guido will get her as soon as possible. We hope to place her into the hands of a falcon specialist, and assess what has happened to her.

Obviously, this ends her migration for the season but her future remains to be seen. We are all hoping that she will make it through the next few days.

And a special thanks to Guido and the other people who took her in. There are alot of people out there that very much appreciate what you are doing for Linda.

The End of Linda's Migration and Life
We are sorry to have to report the death of Linda yesterday. She died in captivity under the expert care of an experienced falcon handler in Panama City.

Although we can never be certain exactly what happened to her, we do know that she was found incapacitated a few feet off a road five hours west of Panama City. She was unable to stand and during her last days and she never regained the use of her legs. Examination of her transmitter showed two major impact "chips" on the top surface of the unit indicating a possible collision. We are having her x-rayed to see if there were any fractures involved.

She was a remarkable peregrine and taught all of us many things since last February. She showed us that migrants can roost near 16,000 in the Andes and cover 580 miles in a single day. We never knew any of that before. She amazed us all with her strength, her innate sense of navigation and her beauty.

We also learned that satellite telemetry is a two-edged sword. We can stand amazed and delighted at what it teaches us but it is also a reminder that what we love will pass. Peregrines have a finite life span and so do we. So maybe Linda's last "lesson" is to enjoy it all while you can.

I can't believe it's been 2 years already, seems like yesterday we were tracking her.

An Early Christmas Present at the Sheraton!
December 23, 2009 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Jan Chudy Reports:

Both adults spent a great part of the day together either on the nest ledge or around the area.  It was heart-warming to see them together.  As I write this shortly after noon on Christmas Eve, they are both together again.  One in the nest box and one on a nearby ledge.

Merry Christmas, Everyone.

To all you wonderful, funny people here, I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

I'm missing Mariah and Kaver, so my greeting is well...them.

I hope wherever they are, they are safe, warm and happy. I pray they both do well this coming Spring and maybe find each other again. That would be the best gift ever. Thank you all for another great year.

Blessings to you and yours,

Donna
