I think that Paul's mantis is the one I posted a few weeks ago.  Very Cool! cool-045

Oh yeah, your stick thingie..... poke  Some are brown and some are green... confused0083
My neighbor was weeding her garden back in July and she came across a very small mantis. I never heard such a blood-curdling scream....(she's afraid of a flea).  stupid

The European Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa) is so well established in the US that it has been made the official state insect of Connecticut, where I grew up.  We still have plenty of kinds of native mantis.  Here is a Carolina Mantis (Stagmomantis carolina) on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina.

Paul

Paul is the one you posted the same as this one I took last year? Here is the pic.

Speaking of Grannywood, I just wanted to share a couple of pictures of her releasing 8 Wood Ducks and a Mallard a little while ago. We didn't have the Woods this year in our backyard boxes, but at least she can say that she helped the population again this year through her rehab efforts!

Lou

Wow...........what a fun thing to do.....good job Granny.....thanks Lou. I love wood ducks.

Sorry about being a poor correspndent this year. I am afraid that some other projects have been keeping me very busy and even out of the Brisbane office. In addition, there haven’t been any solid leads about where F&F are breeding (or if they are breeding). The good news is that they are being seen and have been so throughout the year. The sightings have been made throughout the area that is suspected to be their territory (all the places where we have seen them over the years). The same seems to be true for the other city pair.

The problems with the sightings and reports that have at the moment is that they don’t tell us much apart from what the birds are doing and where they are heading. To a large extent, all the new buildings appearing on the city skyline are making tracking of the birds for any length of time a bit of a problem (they don’t always emerge from behind an obstructing ediface where you would expect). The new buildings are getting taller and that will impact on nest site selection. Also, with all the construction, F&F may have moved to a quieter spot. Finally, it is possible that they took advantage of the good rainfall earlier this year and we have just not detected an early nesting. Certainly, some wild pairs have done this in mid-2009. If there are any further developments, I will let you know.
Cheers
Greg

Thanks jeanne, I've been meaning to check the site. I miss F & F too. Hope they have a better year this time.
