24991  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / STRANGE BUT TRUE: Hummingbirds faster with new speed analysis on: 23-Sep-09, 11:17:59 PM

 humming bird
Posted: 09/22/2009 09:37:32 PM PDT

Q. Birds aren't suddenly flying faster than they used to, so how did we just get a new "fastest bird," looking like "a little magenta fireball dropping out of the sky"?

A. With a new mode of speed analysis using not feet or meters per second but body lengths per second (blps), says Susan Milius in "Science News." During courtship displays, the male Anna's hummingbird dives from on high, whizzing past a female so fast his tail feathers chirp in the wind.

As he pulls up to avoid crashing, he experiences forces greater than nine times the force of gravity, more than any known vertebrate stunt flier outside a cockpit. hummer

When zoologist Chris Clark of the University of California, Berkeley, analyzed the dives, he found that, adjusted for body length, the hummingbird's speed reached 385 blps, easily topping the 200 blps of the peregrine falcon.

"A fighter jet with its afterburners on reaches 150 blps and a space shuttle screaming down through the atmosphere hits 207 blps."  scared blue

Lost my ID mark.   I wondered how long before we would stop seeing that white spot.  It's tough with that camera to ID who's who without verification with the main camera.

Exactly Joyce....I'm always second guessing myself.

I'm pretty sure I saw Mariah today on a street light on 104 W about 3 sections up from the Veterans Bridge.  I'm just not used to seeing her "in traffic" like that.

I couldn't get into a good spot to get a tag number because of traffic, but if it was her, she was big and beautiful!

OH MY....for real???? That's exciting...let's hope...thank you.

Day by day, we are seeing here more spring signs.
Today I saw the first couple of Black-crowned  Monjita (Xolmis coronata), who spend our winters in the north of my country.
Mirta

 congrats What a pretty bird.

Ah its so cute. Is that as big as it gets or is it a baby?

Our snake is about half grown.  They are pretty small guys -- an average adult is about 22 inches or .56 meters.

Paul

thanx for posting that, Donna.  I've been participating in the hawk count on Mount Wachusett for the past 5 years and when I try to explain what it looks like to some people they don't really get it.  This will help a lot.  We had a pretty good year this year, but not as good as last year.  We had a 5000 day last year.  The best this year was a 2200 day last week.  Lots of fun!

All I can say is WOW!  How do you count them all??   hawk

Kris

Thanks Colleen...that's amazing...5000 hawks. Must be a beautiful sight.   foxbinocs
25005  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Re: Montezuma Peregrine-another one on: 21-Sep-09, 08:59:40 AM
Hi All,
We went to Montezuma this weekend to look for the American Golden Plovers.  They are in non-breeding plumage, so they are difficult to spot, but we found them with the Killdeer in the mucklands.
While driving around, we spotted an adult Peregrine sitting on top of a snag.  This was a different Peregrine from the two we saw last weekend.  It was definitely an adult, and looked to be a male.  We told him to go to Rochester and check out Mariah Smiley
Suzanne

How cool...hope he listened. Thanks
