Azalea on the Move: This is the last web photo of the season of Azalea as she looks down at Joe Foreman take her photo which has been posted on both forum sites. Shortly after this photo at 7:45am yesterday August 21, she flew from this nest tree branch.  As soon as I receive the detailed satellite map I will get it posted on this blog site, but we do know that she left Norfolk Botanical Garden by sometime mid-day on Friday and headed due north across Chesapeake Bay and by evening was on the Upper Peninsula of Virginia near Kilmarnock.

Wow, she's a mover.....I wish her well. Thanks for the info.

This time I've also included my not-pets, but balcony friends, two variegated pigeon squabs.  They are about a third of the size of a regular pigeon, but will soon be full-sized and flying away. Sad Already they can fly from the balcony floor to the railing and are quite excited about it!  How can I tell?  Their little chests are puffing away and they are vibrating all over! happy I hope you enjoy these photos more, now that they are each a more viewable

Thanks Anne, your babies are cute. Nice markings.

This guy was raking the seaweed into a pile. Wouldn't that make it harder for the hatchlings to reach the water?  ???

25243  Rochester Falcons / Falcon Watches / Re: We saw a Peregrine today! on: 23-Aug-09, 09:35:38 AM
After a beautiful morning, in which Dana and I did some watching with Carol, Brian, Don, Suzanne, Jeanne, and Joyce at Kodak Park, we headed to Braddocks Bay where we were treated to a live raptor demonstration by the folks at Braddocks Bay Raptor Research.  I had heard rumors that this group had dissolved, but they were there today with several raptors, including a Red Shouldered Hawk, a Golden Eagle, and our favorite, a Peregrine Falcon.

Event Offers Close-Up Look at Area Bird Population

By: Dan Smith

You have a chance the next couple days to check out the many birds that call our area home.

Emma the peregrine falcon is one of the featured birds at the Braddock Bay Raptor Research Center's August Red Tail Days, an educational event geared toward kids and families that features the capture and identification banding of red tail hawks.

"Also there will be tours of the banding station, of the hawk watch, of the songbird station, banding station. So you will get to see this in action," said Susie Cotsworth, Braddock Bay Raptor Research Center volunteer.

You can also see "The Incredible Hawk" in action.

Like any other festival, the Braddock Bay Raptor Research Red Tail Days features food, music, and games.

It runs at Braddock Bay Park in Greece Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Rochester High Falls International Film Festival is nine months away, but it's on the minds of local filmmakers right now.

Festival organizers are holding a bimonthly short film contest with cash prizes and lots of exposure.

They enlisted Mayor Duffy to give the invitation.

"What's your Rochester story," the mayor asks in an advertisement. "We want to see it."

The festival partnered with the city of Rochester for the first contest theme, "Coming Home: Rochester's 175th Anniversary."

The mayor says he's even making a film.

Well-known film critic Jack Garner leads the panel of judges.
The winner gets $1,000. Every other month a new theme will be announced.

"The exciting part is that everyone can play," said John Richardson, the executive director of the High Falls International Film Festival. "You can use your cell phone to shoot video, or you can use a real camera, a very sophisticated video camera or you could use film - so any medium works. And, uh, it's accessible enough that we'll have a lot of submissions."

The deadline for entries for the first contest is September 25. The winning film will premier at the 175th anniversary gala on October 3, and will be screened at the 2010 Rochester High Falls International Film Festival next May.

Maybe someone can do a short film on the Rochester Falcons!!!! It's open to the public. They have different themes every other month... and the prize is $ 1,000....not bad for a short film. Hey, ya never know.

We were lucky that we didn't lose power in our area!  And, as the storm slowed off, the sky went the most incredible yellow and then, as it was "sun setting" time, turned an orange and lit the sky strangely.
Here are the photos:

Anne, your pics are beautiful, (all things considered). Everyone talks about the colors after, the purples and pinks. Mother Nature Paints a  pretty picture. The one that looks like the sky is on fire is CRAZY cool. Thanks.
