Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Peregrine falcons to get help finding new Terre Haute home

Posted: Feb 12, 2015 4:03 AM EST Updated: Feb 12, 2015 4:09 AM EST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Two peregrine falcons that recently lost their western Indiana nesting box are getting some help finding new digs.
Indiana State University crews in December removed the raptors' nesting box from atop the campus' Statesman Towers, which are slated for demolition.
A new nesting box was installed on downtown Terre Haute's privately owned Sycamore Building, but so far the 6-year-old male and his mate haven't used it.
ISU Biology professor Steven Lima says a falcon decoy that's been ordered will be placed on the birds' new nesting box once it arrives.
Lima says he hopes that when the falcons see the decoy "it will really tick them off" and they'll fly over to that would-be competitor and discover their new nesting box.
The pair's old nesting box twice produced successful hatchings.

Our surviving chick fledged with its parents, and we are once again alone until next breeding season. As ever, it was special having the family here again, and wonderful that two healthy chicks spent a few weeks with us. The recent attack and death of one of the chicks brought home how dangerous it is for these owls to nest in our built-up suburban area. They have all sorts of things to contend with - cars, electric fences, dogs, cats, rat poisons, and of course the evil human being as well (maiming and hurting owls for pleasure or superstition). Again, I am reminded to make every opportunity count. To count ones blessings. To appreciate Life's gifts - however transient. To love unconditionally. To be respectful and mindful of Nature. Until next time... Namaste
Good luck little one!!

Yes Donna! Didn't know that they changed it. When we go by there I always look to see if a falcon is on the perch sticking out. No one does anything with this nest. I inquired a few years ago and they didn't really have an answer. It's on the north end of the city. On the left is the main street of Manchester-on the right is another busy road that runs along what used to be the canals for water power for the mills-on the right behind the mills is the Merrimack River. It is on the tallest building to the north-you can see the other tall buildings as it is looking south. On the Merrimack River about two miles north there is an eagles nest-they won't tell anyone exactly where-for obvious reasons ! Thanks Lynne for the answer. Wasn't sure. Too bad they don't take care of their Falcons like others do! I'm going to keep an eye on this one!
