GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A young and emaciated peregrine falcon was among the visitors to the Blue Bridge during the first night of ArtPrize in Grand Rapids.

A couple caught the falcon in a hat and flagged down police shortly before 9 p.m. after noticing teenagers trying to harm it on the bridge.   Jerks

Attention wildlife photographers! We are currently building a new program designed for young children to teach them about the wonders of falcons. It’s a very interactive program, and we use many photographs as teaching aids. If you, or a photographer you know, have taken any peregrine falcon or American kestrel photographs, particularly in their natural setting, and would be interested in donating the use of the image to The Raptor Trust, please email Karyn at kwhitehurst@theraptortrust.org. We will give you full photographic credit, and only use the images in an educational setting. Your help is greatly appreciated! Please email the above address for any other questions or concerns.

Lots of great photos out there!! (hint hint)

Injured protected bird crashes on Bugibba home

This bird, a protected Grey Heron, crashed into the porch of a house in Bugibba at 7.45 this morning.
The  bird had a broken leg and a gunshot wound under one of its wings.
The police are investigating the case.
The government on Saturday closed the autumn hunting season until October 10 because of regular shooting of protected birds. Hunters' associations condemned the decision as unfair collective punishment.
A group of some 200 hunters held a rowdy unofficial protest in Valletta yesterday afternoon and a group of some 30 clashed with birdwatchers in Buskett, throwing stones at them. An elderly birdwatcher was assaulted and suffered facial injuries. His camera was stolen.

Yup, people listen. This is so darn sad!! Wish I had the nerve to carry, I would injure some of these jerks. I HATE guns, they scare me! (I have my reasons). These derelicts just shoot at anything that flies by!

A love story between 2 Eagles.

One is HK from Northfolk Botanical Gardens, the missus is from NC and here is their story well written by Mary Reed Barrow

HK is 5 years old now and ready to breed! Smiley

This year HK is finally 5 years old, old enough to breed. He jumped the gun and proclaimed his readiness by building a huge nest last year near Honey Bee. But Sterling played hard to get. I think she told HK he had to grow up and stop fooling around first.

I've checked my Buffalo lists of juvies. My guess is that this mystery falcon is from UB MacKay 2012: "Phoenix" (aka Talon Alda) male, b/g-16/AW, yellow tape. Parents are BB and Yankee.

I don't think it is a Rochester tiercel. Baron 2013 would more than likely have streaks, and doubtful Zephyr's 2008 band tape would last 5 years.

If you look closely and enlarge my photos, it looks like a 6 in the black. If you use Google Chrome you can enlarge screen to 150% and see 6.  I thought I saw A in green on another pic, but nothing that I could get clear enough to post.

Well, they are pretty much neighbors, Billie and Phoenix! Interesting Joyce.

http://nypost.com/2014/09/21/condo-takes-down-endangered-peregrine-falcons-nesting-box/

They’re flipping the bird at the falcon family.  A Central Park West condo — with the blessing of the state agency charged with protecting wildlife — has destroyed the man-made nest a pair of endangered peregrine falcons used to breed and raise two rare chicks.
Comet and Cruiser’s nesting box had been secured to the penthouse windowsill of animal advocates Steve Nislick and wife Linda Marcus at 25 Central Park West. But construction workers on scaffolds removed the box without warning on Monday, Marcus said. Shortly after, the condo board sent a letter to her apartment saying the board authorized the removal because of the “dangerous condition” it posed to pedestrians and residents below.
“I looked out the window and it was gone,” Marcus said. “The birds came back and were making all kinds of noise. It was heartbreaking.”
Board president Mike Kelly said a letter from the state Department of Environmental Conservation — indicating no state approval was needed to trash the box and that the agency didn’t anticipate its removal would result in any harm — sealed their decision.
“It’s not the board against the birds,” Kelly said. “[Marcus and Nislick’s] emotional investment in the animals can blind them to what the consequences are for people.”
Falcon experts are crying foul.
“The survival of these birds is reliant on the hospitality of strangers,” Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — a master falconer — told The Post.
Experts say losing the box means the 17-inch-tall predators may not breed successfully. Once a peregrine finds a perch to call home, it will typically return there. But eggs laid on building ledges often break.
A DEC spokesman said peregrine eggs and babies are protected in New York state, but the agency determined no harm would be done by destroying the box since the baby birds have flown the coop.
