One egg in the nest and PPO relaxed and well. Lots of hooting from Pappa tonight. Sept 6th

Two eggs confirmed on 9 Sept. All is well with PPO. Pappa stayed close by last night and hooted throughout the night. Seems he's pleased with the second egg.

Still two eggs on 14 Sept. Looks like PPO has decided that two are enough. It has been very hot here and the plants on the balcony needed watering. PPO allowed me to crawl on the balcony floor to her pot plant nest to water the plant. She kept a beady eye on me from the rooftop nearby. Pappa plays Mr Delivery every evening - bringing in food for PPO. Lots of small bites that we've seen. Photos to come later today.

Interesting & disturbing- how anyone could harm a bird as beautiful and majestic as a peregrine falcon is beyond my range of thinking..

Because their "Precious Pigeons" are more important!  stupid  I like Pigeons too but LOVE Peregrines more!  heart

Michael Viney writes a wonderful natural history column every week in The Irish Times. It is called "Another Life" and is always worth checking. Thought you would all be interested in this piece.

A nice read Bobbie and I can't believe how many pigeon owners there are!! No wonder the falcons have it rough! Thanks

3383  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Scientists take first ever photograph of bird with a visible egg on: 13-Sep-14, 03:03:50 PM
Saw this on FB last week:

A unique photograph has been taken of a bird with a visible egg showing after experts sent to study a critically endangered Mascarene Petrel on a remote Indian Ocean tropical island encountered an undeniably pregnant member of the species.

The picture, thought to be the first of its kind for any bird – stationary or in flight – has been greeted with widespread excitement by the bird-watching community.

It was made possible by the collision of a series of unusual factors.

The first comes down to the feathers. While land bird species are generally so well-feathered it’s difficult for the egg to peep through, the feathers of some seabirds – such as the Petrel – hug the body shape much tighter to protect it from getting wet.

The only problem is that seabirds generally nest in burrows in the land and typically only come to that land under cover of darkness, making them hard to spot – pregnant or otherwise.

The species gave the photographer a further helping hand because its eggs are “disproportionately huge” – although the extreme rareness of the bird makes its contribution to the photo history books all the more extraordinary, according to BirdLife International, the conservation group that released the picture and compiles the official Red List of endangered birds.

It also helps that the bird was flying because it’s easier to spot an egg if its stretched out and overhead than huddling in a tree or underground. Finally, she was incredibly heavily pregnant when the photo was taken.

A South Jersey man admitted to shooting four different species of federally protected hawks from his property in 2012 and 2013, the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey said Tuesday.

Robert Losasso, 69, of Somers Point, admitted that he fatally shot or attempted to kill the migratory birds between December 2012 and April 2013, the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

In six instances listed in a court charging document, Losasso targeted four different species: red-tailed hawks on three different occasions; a sharp-shinned hawk; a red-shouldered hawk; and a Cooper's hawk.   Sad

"These species are among the tens of thousands of birds of prey that migrate every year from Canada along the Atlantic Flyway through New Jersey," the prosecutor's office said. "Losasso also admitted that he didn’t have any permit to shoot the birds."

Losasso entered a guilty plea Tuesday in federal court in Newark and faces up to six months in prison and $15,000 in fines. He agreed to pay more than $4,000 in restitution to local wildlife rehabilitation centers for expenses associated with treating or euthanizing hawks injured.

JERK!
