Fledge Watch Report 6/30/14 Arrived at 5:30 AM and stayed until 7. Saw Pigott bring breakfast to Barb. She tried to entice Barb to fly up to the next higher level above the nest box, but when Barb refused to budge, Pigott flew around the building and landed 10 feet away on one of the pillars at the nest box level. Barb had to hop-fly (not a real flight) to get breakfast. Pigott was sparing with the meal and flew off to Chase bank with the remainder. Barb laid down and I left at 7:30. Arrived back downtown about 2:30 PM. Jeff Gilka had kept an eye on the Peregrines off and on during the morning. Barb had begun traveling again along the balcony parapet from the nest box on the northeast corner to the northwest corner and around to the last pedestal where she laid down again. Just before I got there she began traveling back to the nest box area where she remained until after 3. She got restless between 3 and 4 and when Pigott and the male began circling the building, Barb began ledge hopping, this time actually taking short flights of about 8 to 10 feet between pillars. She actually launched out and flew from one to the next all the way to the end and back. After that, she laid down again and slept until 6PM. Barb got hungry around 6, but both parents ignored her. Dad only 30 feet away on the east facia, and Pigott on the Verizon tower. Dad left at 7PM. Around 8PM, Pigott flew off Verizon and was soon seen on the top of Bank America. Dad returned shortly thereafter with dinner (a huge pigeon breast). He landed next to the nest box perch. Barb was screaming at him as he approached and landed. She leaped off the outer perch and attacked, demanding the food. She looked really angry as she grabbed it and wrenched it away. Dad backed off and went up on the perch to watch while Barb devoured the pigeon. Watchers tonight were myself, Diane Green, Adriene Call (sorry if I don't get it correct), Paul and Linda Pflanz. Paul took a ton of pictures. He promised to share some which I'll post later. Jeff Gilka had to leave around 5, but he had some pictures which he may share later as well.

Sad news about the Providence peregrine falcon fledglings... We are very sad to report that 2 of the 3 Providence peregrine falcon fledglings have collided with a building. Only 1 survived. It is currently being cared for and evaluated at the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island I'm trying to obtain more info about the falcon accident, if there was an eye-witness, etc. I will share what I learn. I'm wondering how they BOTH hit a building... I've seen them playing together and locking talons... maybe they got stuck together and crashed? I've seen that happen to eagles before. Some good news - I just saw both parents and the one remaining juvenile, all in flight together... and one parent delivered dinner to the happy youngster... From fb Update: Here's an update on the peregrine fledgling from Born To Be Wild Nature Center. I was told the lucky survivor ate a quail for dinner - I bet it tasted a lot better than city pigeons. Hopefully he can be reunited with his family soon.
