Raptor Education Group: In early May we admitted a banded Bald Eagle. Banding records came back with the news that he was 24 yrs old and had been banded in Upper MI. The eagle had a fractured wing...which included a major joint. We hoped to be able to release this handsome eagle. After 2 aggressive rounds of antibiotics the wing/joint looked much better. The eagle was beginning to use his wing in a normal way and was put into the flight building to begin conditioning. Yesterday morning he was found in the flight with an open wound on the site of the joint injury. Osteomyelitis had developed in the bone. The old eagles condition quickly went from serious to critical. After a call to our veterinarian Dr. Sarah Lautzenhiser emergency surgery was scheduled for last night. The surgery at this point was to save his life not his flight. A partial amputation of his wing was done. He will not fly again, but will live a comfortable life at Raptor Education Group, Inc and work as a foster parent with our other foster parent Bald Eagle, AMP. ( See photos in post earlier this week) A HUGE thank you to Dr. Sarah Lautzenhiser and the Antigo Veterinary Clinic for doing this surgery. It made their already long day much longer. We cannot say enough about Dr Sarah or her team. This complicated surgery to save the life of our special critically ill Bald Eagle required a very accomplished surgeon...and we had that in spades with Dr Sarah. It take a special veterinarian where skill and compassion meet and are so well balanced. The eagle patient is recovering well today. He was awake and standing within an hour after arriving back at REGI. This morning he was not only standing, but wide eyed and checking out the clinic for breakfast. He had a great lunch a bit ago and it on his way to health once again. Antigo Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Sarah Lautzenhiser...please know how grateful we are. After surgery

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/brieaglcam#Not a good cam to watch right now! June 20, 2014 — bald eagle, Eagle, eaglecam, Maine, nature From the info that I’ve seen, it appears that the larger eaglet has attacked and killed or severely wounded the smaller eaglet. (update: just after I posted this, the smaller eaglet was seen getting up!) Watchers note that the smaller one may have also injured the eye of the larger one during the fight. I did not see it happen, but those that did see the fight, say it was the most horrific and gruesome thing they have witnessed on a nestcam. In the past week, food deliveries have diminished, with virtually no food delivered in the last day, and no food for the smaller one for the last 3 days. This nest has had too much tragedy in the last few years, and this is so hard to see happen. link to cam (provided with caution): Good grief these eaglets are brutal!! Everyone commenting sound like the one has died and I hear/see the other crying out for food. I wonder if something has happened to the parents...why aren't they at least feeding the larger one? That big eaglet was crying all morning!! Hope at least she gets fed! Very sad!!

Two in view, two out of view June 20, 2014 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:
It has been a relatively quiet evening for the most part. These birds have been really quiet vocally this year, and not sounding off to give up their locations. One juvie remains unflighted and still in camera view. The three others are not near each other in order for one person to see them . One juvie could be seen on the west side of the Old Bell building south east of the nest building. We scoured the roof lines trying to locate they other two, but no luck. They were just sitting out of view from any angle. As I returned to base, one juvie flew low over head and landed on a shorter building south of the Sheraton, it stayed there for a while walking back and forth trying to figure out which was to fly. It took off in flight south of Adelaide and I was not able to track it very far before it was out of my sight line due to the height of the building. No further sighting of any juvies with the exception of the unflighted bird on the nest ledge. Eventually one juvie was spotted in the same spot as it was last evening. Not sure how long it was there, but it was high off the ground and safe for the night.

Stormy slips, falls, flies too low!! June 20, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills Cathy Kerr Reports: Never a dull day at Harlequin it seems!!! Sue reported an exciting morning with Hayes having his first flight over to the top of 240 Duncanmill! Way to go Hayes!! And Cosmo returned home to the nest ledge–quite a feat!! And there they remained for most of the afternoon with Quest hanging out with the girls and Cosmo– having afternoon naps in, on and in front of the nest box! Then they woke up! Hayes flew to Harlequin’s top ledge, then over to the roof of the nest building. He stayed there awhile but flew back over to 240 where he stayed and was there when we left for the night! Now the other three were preening, wingersizing, enjoying the sun. While Cosmo & Rainbow were doing some lovely beaking, Stormy decided to do some wingersizing and slipped off the ledge!! She fell a few stories, then flew, very low to the building east of Harlequin where she landed on their driveway, not knowing what the heck had happened I’m sure! We found her and after a failed attempt at grabbing her, she flew, so low she passed within a hair of my ankle, back towards the nest building only to land outside the nest on the road!! To our horror I must add! Our team of rescuers raced out to stop traffic and try and get her, but she would have none of it!! Back she flew, past us, to land right beside the road in front of 240. We stopped a bus(tho to be fair he/she was slowing down–probably wondering what the heck a bunch of people were doing running down the road!! what a sight we must of been!!) and finally, Stormy was scooped up, so to speak, by Bonnie! Stormy was deposited in a crate and safely tucked away with Sam in the Harlequin building until she could be put back up on the roof of the nest building by Mark at dark. Thanks to all our team, Bonnie, Bob, Ping, Madison & Jessica for an exciting rescue!!

Second attempt at flight June 20, 2014 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre Linda Woods Reports:
This evening, it was reported from the day shift, that one of the fledgling had taken a second attempt at flight. I found it exactly in the area it was last spotted. The little guy stayed there all evening and was still there at night fall and the end of the watch for the night. Three remain on the nest ledge. Not sure who we have off the ledge until we can get a visual on the band colour.
The Watch continues, and as the young become mobile more assistance will be needed to follow them to ensure they are flying well and staying high. King St watch will be starting soon as well. Posted on June 20, 2014 9:15 am
I wish I lived closer. I may have to move!

SAD NEWS We received word last night that COMTEC, one of the four offspring hatched at the Macomb County Building in May had a flight collision across the street at the Administration Building. She broke her neck and was retrieved by Animal Control. They very considerately took photos of her band numbers and send them to us for identification. Thank you to all who assisted in her retrieval and reporting of the news. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel named COMTEC in honor of Macomb County’s new communication center.
It never ends! Fly Free
