Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Quest and Kendal - Toronto/Don Mills

I'm wondering why we have heard nothing about Kendal for so long. Surely someone must be tracking his progress, or lack of, at a rehab center or wherever he might be. With no news at all, I fear that everyone is forgetting about him. There were only 4 candles lit for Kendal this morning. Dot in PA Absolutely not forgetting about Kendal, last we heard he was doing some short flights and is being well cared for by CPF. Some people just don't give updates or they are too busy. I know he has a long road ahead of him. Not everyone remembers the candles, even though I started the page, I tend to forget also!! Thanks for the reminder Dot!!

Anything Else / Totally OT / Bay Bridge closure D & C
|
on: 10-Oct-13, 08:57:10 AM
|
The outside lanes on the Bay Bridge will be closed indefinitely for Route 104 traffic after a recent inspection revealed the need for repairs, according to the New York State Department of Transportation. The closure affects the right lane in both directions of traffic. Overweight loads with a special hauling R permit are prohibited from the bridge for now. A recent inspection led to concerns about the steel in the bridge. DOT engineers are analyzing the bridge to determine if repairs are necessary. There is no timetable for the lanes' reopening, but the bridge is open for traffic with reduced lanes.

Pappa and PPO kicked up a racket last night! Constant hooting - calling and answering. I was lying in bed and I thought it went on for at least half an hour nonstop. PPO is spending her days on her eggs facing away from the window so the few shots we've taken have been poor. Hopefully if eggs hatch, we will get great ones to post. Will keep trying though.

Saw this on FB I'm surprised that nobody has posted that the Cobb Island falcon nest has an intruder. No fighting--in fact there was bowing between the 2 girls. Wondering if the intruder is a relative of Eve (the resident falcon). There has been a lot of rain & wind there this afternoon so it could be that this intruder is simply waiting for the storm to pass. (There isn't much shelter other than the falcon igloo on Cobb Island.) What say about this?

Red Squirrels by Kate St John, today's blog
So cute! But watch out, he’s fierce.
His small size, soft red fur, fluffy tail and big eyes are certainly cute but the red squirrel is also curious and combative. I think his food habits made him that way.
Unlike gray and fox squirrels, red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) don’t bury one nut at a time. Instead they gather food in a big cache called a midden in a hollow tree or underground. This takes a lot of time and effort: climb the trees, walk the branches, bite off the green cones, watch them fall, scurry down later and collect the cones, repeat the process. Along the way they pause to eat at the same prominent locations leaving debris piles, also called middens, that seem to say “I am here!”
The red squirrel defends a 1 – 8 acre territory against everyone, especially other red squirrels. He’s curious about new arrivals but then, watch out!
First line of defense? Shout at the competition! Burst into a sudden loud chatter that slows to a wheezy hiccup. Really mad? Jerk your tail and stamp your feet. Really, really mad? Chase!
In coniferous forests that’s usually another red squirrel but in mixed forests gray squirrels also get a verbal beating and relentless pursuit. Though the red squirrels are only 1/2 to 1/3 the size of the grays, the red ones always win.
I, too, have been ejected from a red squirrel’s territory. He used his voice.
Now that winter is coming the red squirrels are changing into their drabber winter coats and rushing to increase their middens. They have no patience for anyone.
Cute… ?
Don’t push me!
