There she is BLUE YZ She looks great! I see the tranny! The drive to the Loch of the Lowes reserve this morning felt like an opening scene from King Kong â mist swirled along the lanes & the cloud base engulfed the approach to the Loch! The warm sunshine soon cleared the view to the nest & what a day we have had since! There have been three different intruding male ospreys, all extremely intent on taking a look at the osprey nest with one almost landing. Alarm calls have been frequent with the chick responding by lying very flat in the nest. Our female has stayed close to the nest all day & our male has positioned himself on his usual vantage points to keep an eye out for the cheeky intruders & protect the nest as required. There have been a number of spectacular aerial chases across the loch with our male only returning once the intruders have flown away. There was a fish brought to the nest by our male just before 6.00 this morning & an attempt at a fish in front of the hides just before 9.00. Our female chick is continuing to make short flights around the loch & is improving her landing skills. Visitors were treated at one point to a sighting of 4 ospreys flying above the nest. Other sightings around the loch have been a red throated diver, regular visits from fallow deer & 3 woodpeckers all together on the dead tree in front of the osprey nest.

UPDATE!!! Looking good! C&C's Ohio Peregrine Page Good news for ArcelorMittal juvie! Letâs name her! Last night Laura informed us that the trich-infected juvie from ArcelorMittal survived the surgery. The plaque that was removed turned out to be a granuloma and not a product of the trich. Weâre learning so much from this fighter juvie, and although we hadnât heard of this before, we have since found out that a granuloma is a non-cancerous growth that can form as the result of trauma or injury. So, now thereâs more reason to be optimistic that she can recover if she can start eating and gain weight. She is due for a re-check in two weeks, so weâll report further as we know more. In the meantime, weâd like to consider giving her a name (so that weâre not just referring to her as the âsickâ or âtrich-infectedâ juvie. Iâd like Laura to have the final say since sheâs taking care of her, but weâre open to suggestions. We would like to stay away from human names (although last names can work) and anything too lengthy, but here are some ideas weâve been tossing around: âFracasâ (a synonym for âfightâ), âOakleyâ (after Annie Oakley, the first female gun fighter), or âRalstonâ (after the Utah hiker featured in the movie â247 hoursâ who had such a survival instinct that he cut off his arm to free and save himself).

Linn, Rueben and Neira at Home July 24, 2013 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages
Bruce Massey Reports:
I was out at the Yellow Pages nest site to check in on Linn, Rueben and the kids over the past few days. On Saturday after the storm, I did have both adults confirmed but there was no sign of any juveniles. Tuesday when I arrived, I checked in with security and learned that the juveniles hadnât been positively identified since last Thursday. I set out for a recon walk of the area and was able to spot one juvenile on a building in the territory. I set up my scope and waited for a view of the tape colour that each of our banded young ones has over the USFW band and my patience paid off. I was able to positively identify Neira by her red tape healthy and screaming for food. During my visit I was unable to sight Loki but it may have just been my timing. Yesterday I was back on site and again had Linn, Rueben and Neira who was actively chasing around the local resident birds. As hard as she tried, and there was one good stoop, Neira still came up empty taloned each time. Loki did not make an appearance yet but he is such a great flyer that he is most likely exploring further afield and it may take a few visits to catch him at home. We will be back to check in again and look to spot little Loki and will keep you updated on how the family is progressing.

Wildlife Diary Thurs 25th July Posted on July 25, 2013 by rangeremma Just short flights from the nest today by our osprey chick- she is really getting the hang of landing a bit better too!
Blue YZ is also making strides in her skills in dealing with food, even when itâs alive: the male arrived back at the nest this afternoon with a small pike, whilst the adult female was absent. The pike was flapping and writhing around the nest and our youngster was able to stand on it and subdue it before feeding itself- all skills she will soon need to be fully independent. If the adult female is around when a fish arrives, you will still see her âbabyingâ the chick though and feeding it small morsels- old habitats die hard.
There has been a change in the birds around the loch recently as more and more birds begin to turn up having finished their breeding for the season. Families of ducks and geese with âteenageâ young in tow, and non breeding birds (those that have not been able to nest or lost young) are now starting to congregate in their âoff seasonâ territories like Loch of the Lowes. We have seen more Tufted Duck on the loch and on Tuesday evening a Diver- unfortunately it was so far out we couldnât tell if it was a Gret Northern or Red or Black-throated species. These wonderful birds breed on high mountain lochs in Scotland. Here is a picture of one seen in a previous year on the reserve.
