O’Connor Has the Place to Herself
December 09, 2012 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Another site check I thought I’d do was at the Etobicoke Sun Life nest site where O’Connor and Jack have been seen recently being quite active together.  This past month the pair have been glued to the “is” in Moneris on the west tower of the three buildings and are sitting at times on the same letter!  This is very un-O’Connor like as she tends towards ferocious independance and is not one for peregrine romance.  Today, the “defender of the realm” was all by herself sitting on the web camera housing napping and digesting yet another enormous crop.  A building ledge search of Sunlife and his secret spot on Mabelle Ave did not yield a sighting of Jack.  O’Connor seemed quite pleased to have the place to herself and it was interesting to watch her as she was clearly obsessed with her tray.  She kept looking at it and at one point hopped down, got into the tray and began some house cleaning before flying back up onto the cam case for a nap.  I will be back again on a sunny day to see if I can catch the pair in action.

The wind howled around us last night as the rain fell. I thought of the chicks out there on the balcony and remembered that PPO is the most wonderful mother in the world. Just to reconfirm this fact to myself, I took a quick peak and there she was - wings spread out over her chicks offering them full protection from the elements. She is an amazing mother.
Pappa returned when the wind and rain subsided to deliver something delicious to his family.

7720  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Parakeet Nest in Leonia Blamed for Area Power Outages NJ on: 11-Dec-12, 07:12:33 AM
A monk parakeet nest on a utility pole outside Overpeck Park caused a transformer to short out and power lines to come down, knocking out electricity to more than 3,000 customers in areas from Teaneck to Englewood Cliffs, northjersey.com reported.

The outage was reported shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday and impacted up to 2,000 customers in Teaneck, according to PSE&G. Service was fully restored more than four hours later.

The large nests can cause heat to build up in transformers, eventually leading to a short circuit, according to the report.

Monk parakeets have been nesting in Edgewater and the Overpeck Park area for at least 30 years. Last week, parakeet supporters managed to stop Edgewater officials from cutting down trees where the birds nest.

I was worried when they started laying sheet metal on the ledge where they run back and forth thinking, no traction. Hope this all can be resolved or de-bunked!
