They’re getting killed everywhere and anywhere where there’s even the smallest garage window,” Klem said. “In the case of Toronto, perhaps because of the number of buildings and the number of birds, it’s more dramatic.”

7990  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Outdoors notebook Tennessee! rare falcon caught on: 18-Nov-12, 10:48:43 PM

Rare falcon caught: The first Peregrine falcon has been trapped in Tennessee in more than 50 years.

The falcon was legally caught on the banks of the Mississippi River by a Carroll County resident. Tennessee was awarded one permit by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to allow the trapping of one Peregrine falcon in selected West Tennessee counties.

Peregrine falcons were the primary bird used in falconry hunting in the 1800’s. The population of the birds fell, but has been restored through state and federal conservation efforts and are now deemed sufficient enough to allow some to be caught and used in falconry.

The West Tennessee falcon was netted after being lured in with an animal-like lure.

It has been named “Belle,” and its owner plans to train it as a hunting bird.

Prior to the Tennessee catch, another Peregrine was trapped in Arkansas.

The falcons weigh about two pounds and have a wingspan of up to 47 inches. They can reach speeds of 200 mph during their high-speed dive for prey.

The Peregrine’s range extends from the Arctic tundra to the tropics.

Except for the one permit that granted, it is against the law to capture or kill any other Peregrine falcon, or any other bird of prey such as hawks, eagles and owls.

7992  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Falcon awaits return to wild on: 18-Nov-12, 10:42:06 PM
Dr. John Hitron and Rod Gasche attempted on Monday to release back to the wild a young male peregrine falcon on the eastern end of Dr. Julian Bruce St. George Island State Park where it was found last month by a park ranger. He had been injured, was weak from lack of food and parasites. Chris Beatty and her staff at the Florida Wild Mammal Association cared for it and felt he should be allowed to attempt to return to where he belongs - in the wild!

He was actively trying to leave his confinement so when we opened the door and stood back he quickly headed out into the sand dunes. Much to our sorrow he was unable to fly well enough to survive. He strived several times to rise above the tops of the grasses and bushes but was unable to get up. Because of coyotes on the island, the men were afraid that if left the falcon would never survive them, let alone be able to feed himself as he could not continue to soar for his food.  After a few attempts to recapture him, the bird tired and Gasche was able to toss a tablecloth over him and return him back to the safety of his shelter. Beatty and her volunteer staff will do further tests and continue to work on the falcon’s health until he can take care of himself in his own realm.

Caught in the act - not really but Gigi C and Mary M were downtown on 11/17 and saw them both! They were hanging out on the old First Indiana building at the corner of Penn and Washington. This building was a favorite spot for the frolicking falcon family after the fledging phase. Wide and long ledges. Is KathyQ showing him her old familiar places?

CPF Postmaster Reports:

November 13th - 2012
Over the past week it would appear that the aluminum cladding work has resumed on the south elevation of the nest building at 220 Duncan Mill Road and things seems to be progressing.

While Quest and Kendal have not been seen over the past week, there is no doubt that they are hold up in their usual winter roosting spots watching from a safe distance as their nest ledge gets a new look.

Photos captured over the past 10 days have revealed quite allot of progress with regards to the aluminum cladding work on the south faces of the building.

Stay tuned, as its only a matter of time that Quest and Kendal make their weekly appearance to inspect the recent improvements. LOL
