Eagles at Norfolk Botanical Garden
Everyone at the Garden is saddened by the impending removal of the eagle nest. We will miss the joy of the eagles and the daily interaction with our friends in the eagle community.

The Garden's position has been from the start that there should be an effective solution to the airline/bird, or eagle in this case, problem. Only time will tell if removing the nest is a solution. The current course of action, nest removal and dispersion, has been established by the Federal Government. It is necessary for the Garden, which does not own the Garden property and only manages the Garden at the City's prerogative, to follow the City's lead in matters dealing with the Federal Government.

Norfolk Botanical Garden staff will not remove the nest or apply dispersion tactics. These actions will be done by contractors hired by the City or by state or federal authorities.

Un-sticking Snakes
On August 28, nine snakes were admitted to the Wildlife Center of Virginia — at the same time!  Eight Northern Ring-necked Snakes and one Eastern Milksnake were admitted together on a single glue trap that had been placed at a home in Nelson County on August 27.  In less than 24 hours, the nine snakes became entrapped in the sticky glue.  The homeowner immediately brought them to the Wildlife Center when he found them.

Dr. Rich Sim, the Center’s veterinary fellow, and Leigh-Ann Horne, the Center’s veterinary technician, began carefully working on the snake extraction right away.  At first Dr. Rich and Leigh-Ann used mineral oil to begin to break the snakes’ contact with the glue.  After started to loosen the snakes, Dr. Rich switched to using Goo Gone, a non-toxic, non-irritating adhesive remover.  Within 10 minutes, the team was able to safely free all nine snakes from the glue trap.

The nine snakes were carefully wiped off after the extraction and Dr. Rich gave them a clean bill of health.  Since they were discovered quickly and not entrapped for a lengthy period of time, all snakes were cleared for release.  Dr. Rich released them at the end of the day back in Nelson County.  He reports that the release went well, and all quickly wiggled away!

An investigation - involving an examination of the bird's carcass - is underway to determine why the member of the endangered species died and if the banding operation played a role.

Sad news-Lincoln and Roger_Paw's blogs today say that the female seen since Aug. 20th with Pale Male is not Zena who has been missing for quite a while now.  The new female (if he choses her for a mate) would be Pale Male's 3rd in a year (Lima, Zena and ?) and his 8th total.

               

Darn!
