8776  Anything Else / Totally OT / Crews searching for two men last seen in Irondequoit Bay on: 28-Aug-12, 02:59:05 PM
A search is underway for two adult men who jumped in Irondequoit Bay and haven’t been seen since.

The West Webster Fire Department tells News10NBC they received a call around 2 p.m. for the report of a possible drowning. When crews arrived, they found three children under the age of 10 in a boat. One of the children had called 911 from a cell phone that was on the boat.

News10NBC is told the group was tubing in the bay when there was in issue in the water and two adult males (between 20 and 30 years old) jumped in. They haven’t been seen since.

Scuba and marine units from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Coast Guard are currently conducting a search.

Meet Bianca, a rare baby albino squirrel who arrived at Coast & Canyon yesterday. Eyes still closed, pale fur just starting to come in, and look at the tips of her toenails ~ they're not black like we usually see. She's different than the white squirrels in Olney, Illinois, and she's not amelanistic like the white chipmunk Betty White we cared for last season. We expect to see more signs of her albinism as she grows, especially when her eyes open. For now this sweet girl is just one of the gang, happy to curl up in a warm incubator with her new pals.

Got milk? Actually no. Every baby season well meaning people find orphaned baby squirrels and feed them milk. Most of the babies don't make it. Wildlife rehabbers never feed milk to a baby squirrel but instead use a special formula and feed very slowly so the babies don't aspirate. If you find a baby squirrel, do not feed him or her. Contact a wildlife rehabber in your area right away. The little ones thank you!   heart

Bianca's eyes opened yesterday! She didn't quite seem ready to open them all the way yet but we can tell those little peepers are dark rather than pink. This confirms that she's leucistic (reduced pigmentation), not albino (reduced melanin). Whatever gave Bianca her pale fur, pale feet and sweet little pink nose, she doesn't care. She's just happy to have a good meal, a soft bed, and her best bud Bernard.

Lunch time with Bianca.

A giant owl is terrorizing residents in a Paducah, Ken. neighborhood but government officials said the bird is protected under federal law and any attempt to kill the owl could possibly result in jail time.

So why not just shoot the owl?

Ukrainian-Canadian artist Taras Polataiko devised the exhibit at the National Art Museum of Ukraine, which sees women lie asleep for three days, while potential suitors are able to kiss them. If the sleeping beauties open their eyes, both man and woman are contractually obliged to tie the knot.

PATIENT: Barred Owl, #12-0441

LOCATION OF RESCUE: Halifax County, VA

CONDITION: Healthy Orphan

ADMISSION DATE: April 19, 2012

PROGNOSIS: Good

In April 2012, a young Barred Owl was found on the ground in Halifax County, Virginia.  It was unable to be returned to the nest, and was taken to a permitted rehabilitator.  After re-hydrating and feeding the young bird, the rehabilitator transferred the owl to the Wildlife Center.

The Barred Owl was admitted as patient #12-0441. It was moved outside with a non-releasable Barred Owl that was used as a temporary surrogate [and later placed out-of-state]. In early June, it was joined by Maryland Barred Owl #12-1210.  Center rehabilitators began exercising both of the young owls at the end of June.  In early August, the owl was moved back to a smaller enclosure when several other raptors [that were closer to release] needed to utilize the Barred Owl’s flight pen.

On August 24, the Barred Owl was moved back to a flight pen, to resume its exercise schedule.  Once the owl is back in flight condition, the rehabilitation staff will begin live prey testing. The owl will need to pass five days of “mouse school” successfully. Once live prey testing is complete, and the owl receives a final health-check from the veterinary team, the owl will be returned to Halifax County for release.
