8793  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Eagle Valley Raptor Center was called to help this Great-horned Owl on: 26-Aug-12, 07:12:03 PM
I had to put the breaks on everything I was doing when I got this call today. A Farmer named Tim Helton and two men from Burrton called and then came to our center to take me to a Great Horned Owl that was stuck in a Barbed Wire Fence. The men were Mike Day and Chris Ratzliff. They even stayed and helped me get him free. The owl was soaking wet and you could tell he had been struggling for awhile
. He was really wrapped up tight. The guys held him still while I cut the feathers. So their help was really appreciated. I just hate these rescues, because the birds don't talk and you know they are in pain. That is why I had to go rescue him right away. The good thing was he was only a couple of miles from our center, and I was able to get to him quickly. He is resting now and eating on some nice fat mice.

Fireworks, paintballs may be used in eagles' eviction  Norfolk

The dispersal plan is being drafted, but the city likely will use paintball guns and pyrotechnics to annoy the eagles, Barras said. The goal is to shoot paintballs and fireworks near the eagles to make them feel uneasy.  crying

Aug 24th

There’s been a fair amount of activity today with both Blue 44 and his dad flying around and an intruder female being seen off by the male (well sort of he did his usual dive bombing then playing on the thermals). Our chick seems in no hurry to migrate or become fully independent but given that up until yesterday his dad was still bringing him three or four big fish a day that’s hardly surprising. Why do it yourself when it’s being handed to you? Today however he’s only been given one fish, despite repeated calling to his father so we may be seeing our male beginning his migration preparation as he reduces how much fish he brings in.

Talking of fish deliveries I’ve had a special request for an update fish chart, so here it is bang up to date with today’s lunchtime Perch. I’ve changed the format from a pie chart to a column chart to make it easier to read.

We also received this fantastic picture of Blue 44 in flight which we had to share with you and thanks to Peter Beveridge for letting us use it.

Henderson said people made different suggestions as to how to deter the feathered vandals. At one point they tried to spray the walls with Purex laundry detergent, but that didn’t work.

Using satellite transmitters attached to the birds, researchers tracked one Whimbrel – named Hope – through a large tropical storm in 2011. She took 27 hours averaging just 9 mph to fly non-stop through the storm to get to the center; then she flew at an average of almost 100 mph for 1.5 hours out the back end, using the power of the storm to “slingshot” her towards land.
