8806  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Orville on: 25-Aug-12, 08:20:02 AM
So, is anyone fostering Orville until his return to the nest?

Carol has Orville now and if he can be so called "pieced together or cloned", he will be put back in the nest in Oct. We'll have to see if Orion gets the migration itch first, otherwise, well, you know him and his Orville!

Not that I know of Donna.  We were concerned she'd make a play for either our site or TR Mom's site given they are both adjoining the site she was displaced from.  But as far as I know she came straight for ours.

She certainly seems happy at our site.  The site she came from had a lot of human activity on the rooftop and she didn't appreciate it very much.  Not that most falcons do but she seemed extra sensitive to human presence.

At our site, in comparison, they very rarely go out on the roof at all so she's quite calm these days.  It's nice to see her so relaxed.  I have to chuckle every time I see her out there dozing on the web cam because I remember Tracy's stories of her but she seems so tame now.. angel.  When the kids were here she certainly was crazy protective but now she's just enjoying the peace I'm thinking.  She also seems okay - so far - with Jack not being around a lot and sharing him.

I can't wait until they get the new cam up, it will be great to watch her with babies next year  handshake

Thanks Carly, you have sooooo many nests, not sure how you guys keep up with them all.  thumbsup

No she was never found Donna.  She is not banded so it would be hard to know if she turned up elsewhere.   Sad

OK, maybe I was thinking O'Connor? There was something.

Yes O'Connor displaced Angel after she herself was ousted by Chessie at her site.

Oh I knew it was something but wasn't O'Connor found at another nest site? I'm really confused now. Thanks Carly.

A young falcon takes flight in Waterloo.

WATERLOO — Forget the mountain bluebird and the great grey owl, the most exciting birding event in our area this year has been the news that peregrine falcons have nested successfully atop the 20-storey Sun Life Financial building at King and Union streets in the heart of Kitchener and Waterloo.   2thumbsup

I apologize for not having better photos to share at the moment.  I debated whether to do something on the forum about her but then I decided if I did, it would be like saying she's perished and I'd rather believe she got away and is flying around out there somewhere free and happy.   handshake

Are you talking about Angel? I thought they found her after she was ousted?  ???

Kendal At Home
August 19, 2012 - Toronto - Don Mills

Frank Butson Reports:

 Reporting for Patty:
Sunday August 19th - Harlequin Nest
Arriving at 2pm - on a nice sunday afternoon, I drove around 220 , 225 & 240 Duncan Mills Road - not seeing or hearing a thing !
Just as i was driving towards the Thales building - I heard loud high pitched keyy- keeeey noises
I turned the car around and there, on the south-east corner of the Harlequin building (funny, he wasn’t in his usual upper corner at 240)
was Kendal.    I had to get my camera out just to be sure.  He was quite vocal. I sat there for 15 minutes listening to him squawking all by
himself!
I did another drive around all the buildings in the area (even Thales) and Kendal was the lucky one that got all my attention.
They’re still doing renovations at 220 & 240 Duncan Mills Rd so maybe this is why the site has been so quiet lately.
I haven’t seen Amora, Blaze or Mira in at least a month.  Quest & Kendal are usually hanging around.
Franks Note: It’s possible the young are in the area but this time of year, they are likely off exploring. Fall migration for birds of prey has begun, starting to pick up in September.    Sad

Settling In…
August 23, 2012 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

I’ve seen a lot of O’Connor this past week as she settles in now that kids aren’t around much.  I didn’t see or hear any juveniles this week.

Every morning when I come in, she has been on the center tower where Angel also liked to hunt from in the early morning.  The rest of the time she’s been hanging out on the web cam just sleeping and preening.   She’s been so quiet, if I didn’t know any better I’d swear there were no falcons around!

How wonderful for him to be rescued. Wonder what happened to Momma. Very cute, thanks.

A rare bird has escaped from Edinburgh Zoo and is on the loose in the city after a squirrel chewed a hole at the top of its cage.

Keepers noticed the scarlet ibis was missing and it was later spotted three miles away in Dundas Street, close to the city centre.

The bird is believed to have escaped through a hole in netting which covers its enclosure.

It is in danger of being attacked by predators because of its bright colour.

Dundas Street
The zoo and animal welfare charity Scottish SPCA are tracking the ibis and say they were close to catching it several times.

Darren McGarry, head of animals at Edinburgh Zoo, said: "Our bird team noticed one of our scarlet ibis was missing from the enclosure this morning and a search of Edinburgh Zoo showed the bird had seemed to have left the site.

"This was confirmed when members of the public spotted it on Dundas Street.

"A small hole in the netting over the top of the enclosure was apparent this morning, so we think a squirrel must have chewed through it overnight."

He added: "Together with the Scottish SPCA, our bird team have come close to capturing the bird a few times but we haven't had success yet.

"They'll return again early evening for some more attempts and will continue trying until it gets dark, then again tomorrow morning.

"The best way to catch the bird will be when it comes down on its own or gets hungry."

Lakeland Swan Gives Up Fight, Abandons Nest Near Road

LAKELAND | The bird has moved.

All it took was gentle persuasion in the form of a metal bench and neon cones. And a persistence that rivaled that of the young swan, who insisted on nesting, or pseudo-nesting, on a Lake Morton Drive curb.

The bird made a storm drain on the waterside of Lake Morton Drive near South Vermont Avenue home for a month until sometime Saturday, said Samantha Drew, a city parks worker who cares for the birds.

The swan had first tried nesting on top of the storm drain grate — directly on the road. Drew managed to get her to move on to the curb, above the drain and feet from passing cars.

That's where the bird made her last stand, rooting her way between cones and under a bench city workers placed on the spot to block her. Her mate would charge workers who came too close. The bird spent her time gathering dead grass and leaves for an out-of-season nest that never quite held together.

Friday afternoon Drew shooed her away and tried moving the bench back a few more inches, completely blocking the spot.

Eminent domain prevailed.

When Drew came to feed the swans Saturday, the bird was swimming in the lake with her mate. The piece of real estate she defended for a month was empty, and she apparently never laid eggs.

Drew was relieved.

“That's a really sharp curb that only takes a second for people to drive up on,” she said.

The city plans to keep the bench and cones on the spot a few more days to make sure the bird doesn't return.
