Seen any baldheaded birds lately? It’s the time of year when some NORTHERN CARDINALS and BLUE JAYS display the shape of their skull and their ear holes. Scientists aren’t sure just why. It could be environmental, nutritional or from feather mites or lice. The majority seem to think that some birds just lose all their head feathers at once while molting. Usually feathers are lost and replaced a few at a time.

The strong t-storm with straight line winds of around 80mph blew several osprey young from their nests in Absecon on June 26th. On July 5th we went out to conduct a survey to see what sort of damages occurred.

At the second nest we checked we found the one and only chick that was produced on the ground.

Here is the chick after we put it back in the nest.

This nest lost both young that were produced.

This nest had one chick and it was still in the nest after the storm.

Here are three 6 week old young that were found on the ground. They were put back in the nest.

Kristin, CWF's Terrapin Project intern puts a chick back in a nest.

Here are the three young after they were put back in the nest.

Here's one at the base of the pole.

2 have died out of all that were rescued.

"Hi all, I just returned from a week at the nest, and although the news right now is rather tough to deal with, I would like to add my observations from the past week. I would like all those to know who cannot visit the nest that D13 and D14 are thriving, flying free, and enjoying their eagle life. Mom and Dad continue to teach them every minute and provide the tools to allow them to be as successful as possible. I was able to witness, in a private show of sorts, D13 and D14 spend hours together by the falls at the back of the hatchery, preening and gazing at each other while the sun rose over Decorah, looking healthy and very strong. Mom and Dad are as beautiful as ever and more skilled than you would believe, providing food when needed and continued life lessons.

I just wanted to reassure everyone that this family will continue, and I am happy that they are now better protected from events like this in the future. Please do what you can in your own locale to make a difference

Here is a shot of D13 and D14 as the sun rose on Monday July 2 for you to enjoy - Dave"

Following Patti's Latin names info, how about this name - Upupa epops - for that gorgeous bird, the Hoopoe. A few have turned up here. Excellent tick!

DC visits for a brief, long enough to get little going. NO breakfast yet.

I'll just chew on this until something better arrives.

Mom, I see you brought NO food!
