Almost an hour off eggs and he keeps bringing that gross prey back to the nest! What is he doing?

Want some egg?

Did he have a "junior" moment?

For his part, Wallenda said he’s not overly concerned about a potential peregrine attack. (Oh really?)

Lets just hope Nick's arrogance doesn't get him killed. Having a falcon see him to his death would be symbolic of the battle that is constantly being fought there between nature and civilization but I really hope Anne is wrong and the falcon remains comfortably seated through the event. Having these birds stressed out over such an age old stunt is unnecessary. Good Luck Nick. One of the comments to the story

9907  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Famous red knot bird spotted in southern NJ on: 30-May-12, 07:23:38 AM
REEDS BEACH, N.J. - A famous bird that's flown more than 325,000 miles over nearly 20 years has been spotted in southern New Jersey, near the Delaware Bay. The red knot was spotted Monday in Reeds Beach by the scientist who banded it nearly two decades ago.

The bird was last spotted in Argentina in November, as it began its 9,000-mile trek to Canada. The birds fly 18,000 miles a year.

This bird has covered a distance equal to flying to the moon and halfway back.

Experts say 80 percent of the red knot population has disappeared in the bird's lifetime. Conservancy groups are working to protect the Delaware Bay, where the birds stop to eat horseshoe crab eggs.

The bird is the subject of a book due out in July.

9908  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Wind farms considering detection systems to prevent bird deaths on: 30-May-12, 07:20:45 AM

Adding bird detection systems could protect wind farms from litigation in case of deaths of threatened species.

The DWP awaits necropsy reports that could determine whether Pine Tree will earn the dubious distinction of becoming the first wind farm in the United States to face criminal charges for killing eagles.

The agency initially reported that it believed turbines were responsible. However, it now says it should not have presumed a cause of death, raising the possibility that the eagles died in any number of ways, including at the hands of someone trying to discredit the facility.

Stormin and Haven
May 30, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Frank Butson Reports:

Canada Square peregrine report 20120529

As I arrived at 5:22pm a peregrine flew from somewhere south and around to the east side of Canada Square. Then Haven flew in from Duplex Ave, across Eglinton and straight onto the wall/upright at the nest. She checked on the eyases and then flew south – waaaaay south and disappeared.

Ten minutes later Stormin flew onto the Rio-Can building and sat one floor down from the top. Because the peregrine was so high I thought this was Haven. However when he slouched down into a comfortable position I knew it was Stormin. Another ten minutes passed and Haven flew in from the north, along Duplex ave. She flew in front of the south face of RC and found Stormin slouched on his perch then she circled RC and Canada Square a couple of times before disappearing on the east side of RC. All the while Stormin continued to slouch where he was.

A few minutes later Haven returned flew over RC and then landed on the roof where she proceeded to pluck feathers from a food parcel. There were feathers flying everywhere in the breeze and Stormin ignored the whole exercise. Three minutes later Haven flew to the nest ledge with the food parcel and disappeared. Stormin stayed where he was and later on he preened a bit. Twenty minutes after landing on the ledge Haven flew from it, circled back over it, briefly landed on the wall/upright, checked the eyases and then flew south beyond 2180 Yonge and then west.

Stormin’s preening session left him a mite exhausted and he was back to slouching for a few minutes before leaving his perch and flying onto the northwest corner of the RC building. He sat for two minutes and then I heard him call chuk-chuk-chuk three times. I saw him fly up Duplex Avenue and was gone. So I left too at 7:00 pm

Not what I wanted to hear and probably what I most feared. Poor Sante, trying to keep 2 girls at bay! Bumping doesn't work, Beauty is proof! I hope they find her today, losing mom and all his babies at once, good grief!! Why is there no word on mom if her injuries are minor? Don't these people who have her keep in touch?  Sad

Good luck BF, Tracy, Mark, Bruce and all the rest who are looking for Janet, I PRAY they find her.
9911  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Birds of a feather flock to Bayonne NJ on: 29-May-12, 10:10:55 PM
That's because Bayonne's new neighbors are peregrine falcons. The birds are raising their two 25-day-old babies, Archie and Juliette, in a special falcon perch near the bridge that was constructed specifically for the raptors by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.   thumbsup

the large Pike was brought in alive by the male to the nest, and he had serious problems releasing it from his talons despite the female grabbing it greedily. In the struggle, the fish got loose and it was still alive so flip flopped around the nest and almost flattened the wee chick several times- despite it being very comical the wee one was at serious risk, so the male promptly removed the fish from the nest and brought it back 20mins latter with the head removed- a  much safer dinner!

I knew when I was watching last night, I only saw 1 out on the ledge. Not sure where the other female was but she wasn't in the cams view. So so sad for that little one that fell. They are too young to be out on that ledge, just little fluff balls.  Sad
