Anything Else / Totally OT / Re: Travel Camera

Not sure if I'm too late with this reply (I almost never check the OT forum), but the Panasonic Lumix TZ-3 is the one I have (and probably the one that Dale is referring to). That camera is actually a few years old. The latest version is the TZ-10. They upped the zoom range to 12x, which includes a nice wide angle capability that you don't usually get on a "superzoom" digital camera. It also has a built-in GPS receiver so your pictures can automatically be tagged with the location in which you took them. The camera has optical image-stabilization which works in two modes. One mode shows you the stablized image in the viewfinder; the other only engages at the moment the shutter button is released. The latter mode is actually claimed to work better, but if you're shooting with the lens zoomed all the way in, having the stabilized image on the screen is better for framing IMO. The other big advantage of the camera is that it can shoot Hi-def (720p) video. They also added more manual controls (though the automatic mode or one of the presets works great for most shots). There's a nice write-up of this camera at http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_TZ10_ZS7/index.shtmlThe TZ-10 replaces the TZ-7 which is itself a very capable camera, which lacks only the GPS ans some other minor features. If you don't need/want to geotag your images, the TZ-7 is probably selling at a discount now.

This egg just doesn't look right.
Now that I'm home & looking on a real monitor, I'm thinking the 3rd egg may not be good. I'm not giving up hope yet, but that spot does look strange. Only time will tell. I think so too. Like it's oozing something and that's why everything is sticking to it. It's not good for her to be brooding it if it's bad, is it?It shouldn't be a problem...lots of unhatched eggs in a lot of nests...Rhea Mae still has an unhatched egg in the scrape... It's still too early to write off the 3rd egg, but I'm beginning to wonder too, if it might not hatch after all. No problem if it ends up being non-viable. 2 eyases for new parents is a great number.

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: The New Streaming Video with Sound is Great !

The streaming video is great, and it has finally enticed my lovely wife into sharing the falcon semi-addiction I have experienced for the past seven years. The accompanying staccato, twitterish chat, however, makes me long for the insight and substance of the old yahoo-based forum postings.
The social stream is really not geared toward insightful comments; there are simply not enough characters available. It's true purpose is to drive traffic to the Ustream.tv website, since every message posted on the Social Stream chat is mirrored on one or more social networking sites, and includes a link to the video stream on the Ustream page. Unfortunately right now it seems like there's a lot of speculation and outright incorrect information being posted on the social chat. The problem is that new viewers might see it and think that it's accurate. I suppose that's par for the course though, when it's open to anyone who wants to log on... The best we can do is to direct people to the Forum, Imprints or one of our other sections for more in-depth information.

She made a great alarm clock, except in my dream I was looking for playing puppies! It took a second to realize that it was Beauty in real life!
It's funny you should say that. Falcon kakking is my alarm clock! Several years ago Jim P. shared an audio file he had made from a video of Freedom kakking in Port Colborne. Susan C. shared a program to convert the file to a ring tone. Voila! My phone alarm is Freedom kakking! Do you still have that program? I tried recording right from my phone and it was way to low of a sound when I played it back. I need another something to drive my husband mad. Here's the original file: http://marchlords.com/sounds/pefa_freedom_ringtone.mp3If you have a phone that can use MP3 files as ringtones you can just save this file to your ringtones folder (this is the case with most smartphones, and probably many feature phones). If not, there are plenty of programs available online that can convert MP3 files to ringtones for various phone models.

Rochester Falcons / Rfalconcam Website News / Chat on Live Video Stream Page

Logging in with your AIM account doesn't post anything back on AIM as far as I know. I haven't logged on to AIM in ages, but I recall that it didn't post my IMs any place where someone could see them.
I wonder if instead of using Ustream's social media chat service we could port the Ajax chat that we use on the Forum here into a frame on the Video Stream page? That way everyone could use their forum logon to post their comments on the video stream.

Okay -- I'm going to show my sawdust brain... How do you "login", to be involved with the running commentary on the new live video page? I don't know what those different symbols represent -- I think there are four of them up to the right of the streaming video... Help!
Thanks! Anne C. (Toronto, ON Canada)
The logons are for Twitter, Facebook, AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) and MySpace. If you have accounts on one or more of those services you can log into them by clicking the appropriate icon. That allows you to post a short message on the "Social Stream" for the video. Note however that every time you post there, a copy of your post gets sent to whichever service(s) you've logged into, along with a link back to the Rfalconcam feed on Ustream. So if you're not into making lots of Tweets or updates to Facebook or MySpace, you might want to limit your use of this feature...

Check out the new Video stream and All Cameras view on the Rochester Falconcam! Go to the main page and refresh your browser, then click the Camera link at the top of the page and choose the Video Stream to view live video and audio from Camera 2.
Shaky and Kenn worked hard to get this up and running in time for everyone to watch the hatching this year. Don't forget to thank them!
