Great news and that fly-by, Jim was awesome!!!!
Thanks. I was lucky to be in the right place. Mike Allen, Bill Stewart, Carol and Kathy were lined up to my right. It's just good fortune that Jemison took off in my direction. It's the closest a Peregrine has flown by me since Mariah swiped my glasses

That's the way I feel. I was initially a little disappointed to hear that he wouldn't be brought back to Rochester for release, but I'm confident that the DEC and the rehabber have made the right decision. Hopefully we'll be able to have a couple of people present at the release to document the event and take pictures.

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Kakking

The available literature on the subject (at least that which is easily accessible via a web search) indicates that both the adult and juvenile vocalization is referred to as a "kak". I don't think there's any problem with referring to the alarm call of either a juvenile or an adult by the same term, though there are certainly differences in timbre, depth and volume. See the "Voice" section on this page from the Canadian Peregrine Foundation for an example. The Communication and Perception section of the Peregrine page on the University of Michigan's Museum of Zoology site also has some useful information that points toward both perceptions of a "kak" and an "ack" being basically the same vocalization since there is a great deal of individuality in these calls. It makes for interesting reading.

Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Callidora question

I did a little bit of research. In 2008, Quest fledged on June 21 -- just one week earlier in the year than Callidora did. Exactly 40 days later, she was in Duanesburg, NY, on her way to Cape Cod. So if Callidora follows Quest's schedule, she will be leaving for good sometime this week.
It's sad for me to see the falcon season end, but it's a good feeling to know that one more falcon has been reared to independance.
Paul
I'm also thinking that she's probably moving farther out, possibly even striking out on her own. Given the later hatching for this year's brood, I'm not surprised that the watchers haven't spotted Callidora for a couple of days. The juveniles usually get scarce at about this stage in their development...

I regret to say that I never used Kodachrome. I was a b/w print film guy back in my analog days (Tri-X pan was my favorite, but plus-x got lots of use too). I had a science teacher in High School and he shot Kodakchrome, IIRC. Great film. Too bad it's passing into history. Good song, too...

I had every intention of posting my pictures from last Sunday morning with the out-of-towners, but I got pulled into an eleven-hour standby at a fire scene. I've posted some pictures in a Picasa album that you can find over at Peregrinations.

I'll be busy all day Saturday saving the citizens of Monroe County's southeast quadrant (mostly from themselves ), but I'll be there on Sunday. I hope no one tries to jump out of your ambulance. I could tell you a story about the completely naked guy we picked up on I-490 while driving back to the base from Strong Hospital a couple of years ago, but it'd be a violation of federal law . He was crazy enough to jump out of a moving ambulance too...

Remember that unnecessary text messages can be a distraction to watchers, not to mention an extra expense.
Too true. Several of our watchers are charged for each text message they receive and/or send on their mobile phones.
