91  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Re: 2010 - Syracuse Four on: 22-Jun-10, 09:08:05 AM
Thanks for reporting this Joyce, and good work from you and Brian, as well as Don and Suzanne, for lending a hand.  I'm sure the Syracuse folks appreciate having some experienced watchers helping out.
92  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Pictures from the Rfalconcam cameras on: 22-Jun-10, 09:02:46 AM
Might have to zoom cam 1 out just a tad...or shift to the left a hair...one of them (Jemison I think) is on the north corner.  I can just barely see feathers blowing.

PanCam is at its widest zoom in that shot.  One thing on our to-do list for later this year will be to move the camera farther back so we can get a wider view...

Got to watch some wing flapping and feeding from the ground at Noon today with Larry O.  Brian was up on top of the South Ave garage keeping an eye on things from a higher viewpoint.

Woodpeckers look so exotic and prehistoric.

I do too.  They remind me of feathered pterodactyls, especially when they're landing.

Jim, feel free to come through the gate into our yard if you need a different, or closer, view!

Thanks Amy!  Last week I wandered outside to add more suet to the feeder and the adult male was there.  He let me get about 8 feet away before he flew off.  Usually they're more skittish than that.  I do notice when they leave my feeders they often end up on one of the trees in your backyard...

Thanks!  The suet feeder is only about 15 feet from my back door.  We're really spoiled with the good views of the Pileated WPs.

Dawn and I got to watch a mother Pileated woodpecker with her two offspring at our suet feeder today.  I managed a few pictures, and put together a short blog post about it.

98  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Callidora first out/in of box on: 14-Jun-10, 03:01:34 PM
I like this box set-up!  Gives the kids an early peek at something other than the box.   clap

It's better in some ways than the "playpen" at the Kodak tower.  There's no four-foot drop to get there, and it's easy to get back to the nest box if needed (for instance, to get out of the rain).  There's also a ramp going down into the alcove below so the eyases can get up and down.

The downside is that there's basically nothing on the south side except a long drop to the ground.  Hopefully when they go off that side it'll be under good wing power.
99  Rochester Falcons / Rfalconcam Now / Calli Left The Nest Box on: 12-Jun-10, 06:50:33 PM
Callidora took a short hop out of the nest box and onto the platform just now.  She was out for less than a minute before hopping back in.

It won't be long before she and Jemison are out and flapping all the time!

2funny   They look like little fighter jets when they wing-out!    thumbsup

If you think they look like fighter jets now, wait until they get the hang of flying...
101  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: YouTube vid of banding? on: 12-Jun-10, 02:37:00 PM
Hi all,

I read somewhere on this site that they were going to put a video together of banding day and post it on YouTube. Is that up yet?

I had to miss the whole banding day because my Modem broke Cry

Thank you,
Ian

Over at Imprints you can watch the banding from one camera without sound and another with sound, both at Ustream.tv.  I've also posted a couple of short video clips in my blog post about the banding.  Those videos plus some Banding Day clips from the Rfalconcam cameras can be viewed at the Rfalconcam channel on YouTube.
102  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Ogdensburg bridge nest on: 11-Jun-10, 09:51:04 PM
I saw this on CPF...

!!! Zanar has been located, and with her new family of four!
June 11, 2010 - New York - Prescott-Ogdensburg Bridge
CPF Postmaster Reports:

We have just received some great news from Mary Beth down in New York state.
She has been closely monitoring the nesting activities of the Ogdensburg bridge peregrines and in addition to finding out that the pair have in fact produced four hatchlings this year, and nesting on the Canadian side,,, she has been able to identify the band number of the resident adult female!
I just checked the band number against our records and we have been able to positively identify the identity of the resident adult female as being named “ Zanar”,, produced at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ottawa Ontario on 2004, banded Black 69 over Black K, with a sliver USFW band # 168705686

Zanar was banded at 25 days old, 920 grams – (empty crop weight), June 11th 2004
Thanks You Mary Beth!

Do we know if "Sabrina"/Valiant is still the tiercel there?

As late as last December Valiant was still the resident male...
103  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: Updated Banding Table on: 11-Jun-10, 09:46:05 PM
Thank you for pursuing this, Patti.  Surely, though, the first graders who fledged from high school are not the same ones who named Freedom in 2002!   Smiley  It would really be nice to track some of them down.  They would have a vested interest in becoming the next generation of fledge watchers.  Oh, well.
Kapi in VT
P.S.  Sorry I won't be seeing you in Rochester this year.

Right, unless they accelerated a couple of years.  In 2005 they had just graduated from 5th grade when Nancy commented on my blog post about seeing Freedom at Port Colborne...

104  Other Nature Related Information / Falcon Web Cams / Re: Alcoa Anglesea, Australia on: 11-Jun-10, 08:55:15 PM
Thanks for sharing. Back when I worked at Kodak, we hosted a group of people from Alcoa for a benchmarking effort. I wonder if they were inspired by the Kodak webcam from that visit?  Hmmm..

They have the Kodak webcam in their links.  The link goes to the Kodak website, but the Kodak website links back into this site.

Lou

They were.  They contacted us (Kodak) in 2004 or 2005 (I can't recall which year exactly) to inquire about our camera setup and nest box design.  I like to think we're responsible for the Alcoa webcam.

Amazing photos, Jim!  Can we make your photo of Archer the photo of the day?

 wave

Certainly.  That would be great!
