You can't have too much help, but you can have too much helpfulness.
Or is it - Money can't buy you helpfulness.
Or to paraphrase Capt Ahab: From hell's hot, I help at thee. With my dying breath, I help thy name.
Or something like that. I was never very good at literature.
(So actually I went and googled Ahab's statement, and he is pretty much having an anger moment.)

I even saw today that some weren't sure how to post a comment under the forum or having difficulty doing so.  Perhaps under the home page, there could be a section for that. Shaky? Is that something you can do?
I still don't know how to capture a picture and attached it to a post!
Maybe a section called Navigating Falconcam ?

First, we needed a help section. Now we need help on how to use the help section. Then we will need help on how to use the help on how to use the help section. Then...

We will continue to add information to the help section and hope that people will take the time to read it.

I'm feeling bad. I know not to anthropomophize, and I won't here, but I do so wish things had turned out differently. Larry O

33  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcons News / Re: Beauty and Unity Throwdown at Kodak Tower? on: 18-May-11, 12:58:35 PM
Those pictures are scary. Larry O

WOW I guess I better check around Kodak Office more often. I assumed Beauty and Unity would stay near their nests during this time. This is one problem we don't need to be happening right now. There's enough drama already. We watchers are ready to spring into action if need be.  pray

Good grief, glad they have both been seen.  Maybe they don't like sharing Archer and both feel threatened by the situation.  Not all falcons may accept this type of situation I guess - not for human type reasons but reasons of caring for offspring and territory.

I'd think Kodak Tower would be part of Beauty's half of the territory, so she was defending her nest.  Unity needs to stay in her half...maybe she didn't realize where the line is.

Let's just hope Unity stays near her nest and doesn't come looking for Archer and Beauty does the same.

I just started a new job two weeks ago, so I'm going to be short on vacation days this year...so no Rochester visit for me.   Sad  I hope there are some successful hatches, healthy juvenile peregrines, and you guys get to see some great flying!

Maybe I don't need to sponsor Barf anymore. It sounds like he's got some admiring girlfriends out there.
Larry O Grin

Turkey Vultures are usually just floating through the area on migration.  They may be attracted to the caches left by the Peregrines on top of buildings.  As far as I know, they are no threat to Peregrines or their young.  They are just in the wrong spot at the wrong time, when it comes to a protective Peregrine Papa.

Personally, I think Turkey Vultures are handsome birds.  If you get a chance to visit with Barf at Wild Wings, you might change your opinion.   wub2

Carol P.

Thanks,Donna for asking, and thank you to BF and Ann for the report and pics of Kendal with TV.
I left work yesterday and stopped because  I saw the  ugliest thing sitting in the road.  It flew up when I passed, so of course I stopped and then saw three turkey vultures sitting in trees on the side of the road.  I pulled out my binocs and just sat and watched them.  They are big and  "big ugly".   So good for Kendal for sounding the alarm and chasing this  big, ugly TV from the nest.
Actually, if someone can answer...how much of a threat are TVs to the nest?  I thought they were only attracted to carrion, and by the scent or gasses given off by decaying matter.  Do TVs prey on nests too?
I know our parents downtown have been subject to TVs  and given chase as well.  Can anyone inform?
I fell in love with Barf, he caught my attention!!  heart

I agree with nervous laughter. They as witnesses experienced how the cycle of life works in a very dramatic way.
We falcon watchers when seeing a stoop are prone to similar emotions. We've cheered for the falcon knowing that success meant the snuffing of another bird's life.
We've never seen it up close tho' nor watched the struggle when the prey is as big as or bigger than the peregrine.
It is a powerful video on many fronts.

Couldn't watch second video. Commercials kept overriding the video and the sound.
First is excellent.

My head is going to explode. Larry O

And one other interesting tidbit...

If she's 73/H - Female banded at the Bayshore Power Plant, Lucas County, OH 2009- Name: Shay, then she hatched at the same scrape where Millie (Archer's sister) nested in her final year with Swifty, before moving on to Monroe MI with Leopold.

Here's the piece I'm not sure of...Is Shay the daughter of Swifty & a new mate?  If she is, she's ALSO a relative of Beauty, though a bit more distant.  Swifty is the son of Roosevelt, Roosevelt is the brother of Erie, Beauty's father.

And Erie, Roosevelt & Leopold are full brothers.  And Hunter, who was with "our" Ranger in Toronto, is their half brother (all sons of Bandit).

Ei

Wow!  You know your PeFa  family tree!   I don't think I know that much about my own family tree :-)
It will be an interesting nesting season.
Thank you for all the information..

What is the difference between a dog and a cat?

A dog lives in your house and sees that you give it food and water and says to itself, “Wow, these beings give me food and water without my having to do anything. They must be gods!â€

A cat lives in your house and sees that you give it food and water and says to itself, “Wow, these beings give me food and water without my having to do anything. I must be a god!â€

44  Rochester Falcons / Satellite Tracking / Re: Where is Quest these days? on: 29-Nov-10, 10:01:45 AM
Now would those be "V" aliens?
God help us if she ever takes up with the "Twilight" folks.
Larry O

It looks like the wrong set of coordinates were entered. There are always two solutions to the satellite tracking equations. (Remember those quadratic equations in high school algebra?) These two solutions represent the positions on the Earth's spherical surface that intersect the line representing the direction of Quest's signal as determined by the Doppler shift of the orbiting satellites. At least that's how I understand it.

Anyway, there are always two sets of coordinates, and it is usually the first set that is correct. However,  in this case, the 2nd set was correct, but the 1st set was plotted on the map. Quest's correct position was near Prince Edward Point

Well, my working theory is that Quest was abducted by aliens and taken to their base high in the boreal forests of Colorado...

Unfortunately Argos doesn't provide any guidance as to which of the two sets of coordinates are the correct one for any given data set.  Thus far, it has always been the case that the first set are correct, but context is clearly important when plotting the data...

The data point was pretty obviously bogus. Not only does it show Quest hundreds of miles farther west than she's ever traveled, but the nearest data points both before and after the one plotted were back at PEP.  Those data points had very poor Location Class and quality values associated with them.  But she's been so boring lately with her concentration around Prince Edward Point that I thought I'd spice up the map with a little "zinger" courtesy of Argos.
