Sandy is confirmed again this year!

Peregrine Falcons Southeast Michigan

Update: Whittier Apartments, Detroit ? Local volunteer, Thyme Warner was able to identify both Peregrine Falcons yesterday. She confirmed that it is the same pair as last year. The male is Fryer (black/blue, 43/C) who hatched in Flint in 2016. The female is Sandy (black, Y/97) who hatched in Ontario at the Toronto Sheraton in 2015. Good job, Thyme!

Dropping Some Wisdom On You!

Another chapter of Wisdom's 71-year journey begins. On November 24, 2022, Wisdom returned to her winter home, giving us another reason to celebrate Thanksgiving. Her arrival was only a day later than her arrival last year.

Akeakamai, Wisdom's partner, has not been seen for at least the past two seasons. Male albatrosses typically return to the breeding site before their mates.  Wisdom's interactions with other birds in the vicinity and the absence of Akeakamai suggest that Wisdom might be widowed.

Last November, Wisdom returned to her nest site for two days and was not seen interacting with neighboring birds. Wisdom's last egg was produced in November 2020; however, the last time she successfully reared a chick was in July 2017.

As for chicks of Wisdom, last year, a chick that Wisdom fledged in 2011 and their partner were observed nesting for the first time in coastal shrubland near the Midway dining facility. While this pair produced Wisdom's first known grand chick, it, unfortunately, did not survive to fledge. The young couple has not returned this year, but most albatrosses do not breed in the year after their initial nest attempt. We hope to see them return and have better success in the future.

While Wisdom has not been seen since Thanksgiving, it is still possible that she may find a new mate and may reappear in the next week or so. Staff at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and Battle of Midway National Memorial will constantly be checking the area.

We are excited to keep you posted as we learn more about Wisdom?s life journey this season and any news regarding her family.

Stay tuned...
