Marta takes flight June 11, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills
Marion Nash Reports:
Bob was the first one on site this morning and found that Marta had finally left the nest building. She was on the ledge 2 floors down 2 from the roof of 240 next door so we were pleased to see she had gained some height. She spent the morning there alone until the early afternoon when her brother Jet decided to drop in to visit his sister and the 2 spent time together playing, snuggling and peak touching it was very sweet but when mom flew over with food it was every fledgeling for himself and he flew off in pursuit of lunch leaving Marta flapping and yelling on the ledge.
2 of the boys got fed on the roof above her and shortly after she took another awkward flight around to the front of the building and landed on the ledge about 1 floor lower but still ok. She had not been fed the day before as the adults refused to bring food to her so low, only 2 floors up from ground so she was very eager now, flapping and yelling and running the ledge and we could see she was ging to go again so we had the net in hand ready to run to get her just in case. About 15 minutes later she took off across the street towards Harlequin and bumped a window and landed in the parking lot.
We slowly approached to try to catch her but she flew back across the street before we could get close enough to net her and again landed on the ground. We finally caught her in the net and checked her over to see if the window bump have caused any injury and found her to be just fine.
Shortly after we took her back up to the roof just above the nest to be realised just as we had for all 3 of her brothers but this time the bird bolted off the roof and across the street over my head wile I watched from below and Mark watched from the roof flew out of site well out of our site behind 255 Duncan Mill and now the search was on to find her.
Mark and I went looking for her and were joined by her name sake Marta Kline and Cathy Kerr and we looked for her well into the evening and cold not find where she had landed so we closed the evening watching the boys flying around like little F16’s hoping that from where ever she had gotten to she may see them and come to join her family but that was not to happen so if she is not back we will have to try find her again tomorrow.

Hope they can find her!

Sad news: Latest Update from the Norwich Cathedral Peregrines – Sadly Chick 43 Found Dead It is with regret that at 5.30pm on the evening of Thursday 9th June, we at the Hawk and Owl Trust were informed by the cathedral authorities that a dead peregrine chick had been found in the cathedral grounds. On investigation we are sad to confirm that it was Peregrine chick 43 who had fledged earlier that day. When chick 43 fledged on the morning of the 9th, she ended up landing on the wall of the Deanery in the Cathedral Close, but being that low to the ground and unable to make her way back up to the nest box, Nigel Middleton from the Hawk and Owl Trust intervened by taking the chick back up to the roof of the bell tower and the base of the spire. At that height she was more likely to be fed by the male than nearer ground level. When she was returned to the tower by Nigel, she received a brief health check and was found to be in perfect condition. She had been well fed in the nest and was a strong chick with condition perfect feathers. Within a short while after being returned to the bell tower, she was seen to be harassed by the now dominant female (GA) who would have taken her to be an intruding peregrine. Once chick 43 had left the safety of the nesting platform, GA would no longer see them as fledglings and would have felt threatened in what she now preserves as her territory in the absence of our missing female. Chick 43 has now been sent to have a post mortem so that we can establish the exact cause of her death. With our future fledglings, the Hawk and Owl Trust stands by the policy that in the event of an injury to any of the remaining chicks, the Trust will intervene, working with a local bird of prey rehabilitation group, to assist and treat them, however if any of the chicks were to die as part of an accident then sadly that is nature. We will be posting further press releases and information over the coming days as our remaining chicks fledge the nest. Thank you I was afraid of this..hope others don't get hurt.

E8 UPDATE: E8’s IM pin (intramedullary pin) which is used to join fracture bones has been removed from the right leg. Additional pins remain in the eaglets right leg and will be removed as the leg continues to improve. Since being moved to the outside small flight enclosure last week, the eaglet has been bright, alert and perching on higher perches. E8 still requires assisted feedings but recently ate full rats and a large fish on its own. Great news!

It appears baby has passed away. Fly free, little one. Just posted on FB- After receiving a positive examination earlier this afternoon, the downtown Phoenix peregrine chick was returned to the nest. Unfortunately, it appears the trauma of the fall, combined with the unseasonably high temperatures, proved too much for the chick, which has died.
Earlier the chick underwent a physical examination, was hydrated and underwent X-rays to check for any broken bones. It was found to be well enough to be returned to the nest. It's likely the chick succumbed to an internal injury that was not evident during its exam earlier today.
We wish to thank viewers around the world that came along with us on this uncharted journey. It is our hope that, despite the outcome, you gained an appreciation for our wildlife and the many challenges they face. Participating in an unfiltered view of wildlife offers an unpredictable glimpse into the real-time joy and drama facing these peregrines, 40 percent of which don’t survive their first year.

The eyas was out on the ledge today and fell either 6 or 8 stories! They checked him over, placed him back into the box. Dad is trying to brood him . It's 113 degrees there today and he's panting very heavily..looks very distraught over the baby. Not looking good..baby doesn't appear to be breathing. 😢
