!!! One egg broken!

It would appear that one of two recently laid eggs has been broken :-(

Sadly, this is one of the typical results of an urban nest ledge,, where there is little to no nesting sub-straight base for the peregrines to dig out a proper nest bowl to contain and coddle the eggs in safety so they can be incubated properly. (Thus the need for a nest tray and proper nesting sub-straight)! But,,

For what ever reason, the resident female decided to lay her eggs outside of the nest tray this season, and as we have seen many times over the past 20 years where the peregrines have not used the nest tray, the results are all too familiar.

Once again, there seems to be lots of activity on and off of the Toronto Sheraton nest ledge, but the adults are not giving us any decent views of their leg bands and positive identification has yet to be confirmed.

Will there be a new cub(s) later on this year?

The sad thing is, there is nothing we can do if something is going on. All we can do is watch. 

            I know.   

This whole thing is bizarre.  Digging a scrape next to the nest box doesn't seem normal. Dropping eggs from the edge of a box isn't normal. Did she ingest something bad? Has she got something bacterial, fungal or viral? Is Ivy or another female around, challenging for a box and they got into a battle and she's injured?  10 yrs old is not that old so I wonder what's really going on.  I feel so bad for her and Tiago.

I was in Pittsburgh for a very short while today. Around 2:00p I spotted a pefa near the top of the Cathedral of Learning, on the southeast side of the building. It did not take flight and its back was to me so I was unable to see bands. Pretty bird with bright white side feathers and a very dark helmet. Pigeons flying across lower buildings a block away.

          Nice!   

Congrats to Rhea Mae and Tiago on #2 egg!

I thought it was safe to go to the kitchen because she seemed to be napping after her meal and here she goes and lays her egg and I missed it..lol!

I watched her until 4:45, after her return from a short break and she was napping..we reheated our leftover Easter dinner and I missed it too!  

Looks like the first egg for the new Woodmen pair.

I'm surprised they're so hunkered down on the eggs today..hard incubation started so soon?

the @PittPeregrines twitter account just reported about 25 minutes ago that Hope and Mystery Beau mated on the Cathedral's lightning rod

                           

Okay, I can see that the Times Square Building has upped it's game more than a bit in the lighting area.  The gauntlet has been thrown down, and I think we at the Aqueduct Building should respond in kind.  Nothing that will harm the falcons, of course, but maybe colored lights on Mercury, or a glowing crown, or flames shooting out of his sceptre?
