1/25/16: Egg Alert! We have our first egg of 2016! We have noticed that the mother has been leaving it exposed a good bit. We're hoping this is just delayed incubation, which the parents sometimes do with the first egg to ensure the eggs hatch closer together. If another egg is coming, it should be here in about three days.

Southwest Florida Eagle Cam 12 mins
We have a PIP! Officially confirmed using photos & videos from yesterday evening, the hatching for 1 egg has begun. The visual confirmation took a bit longer than usual as H & M15 have been doing a great job turning and warming the eggs.

The cameras at the Times Square building stopped transmitting at 3 PM Tuesday when the Internet connection was lost. There is a problem with our provider's antenna that seems to be related to temperature. When it gets cold, it stops working, and it has been below freezing in Rochester since Tuesday.
Today, it is expected to get warmer. The antenna might start working again for a few hours. We'll see.
Did they put up a new antenna because we've never had temperature related loss of Internet before that I can remember? Is Rfalconcam the only one in the building connected to this particular internet service? It's the same antenna system. Some component(s) of it must have become damaged or degraded since last winter. Rfalconcam is currently the only user of the service. There was another, but they left TSB several years ago. Thanks..just wondered. Are they going to replace the antenna eventually, with Rfalconcam being the only user and we get it for free?

I'm sorry I never got to meet Mary. It sounds like she was a very special lady.
I didn't know who she was. She might have been more of a Mariah and Kaver follower and didn't participate on the Forum when Beauty took over?

Thank you for the update, Kris. This is really bad. I don't want to see any birds poisoned, and of course I am especially concerned for Ares and Astrid. I know some people don't like pigeons, but there is no excuse for poisoning any bird or animal. And perhaps two different poisons here? Is there an ongoing investigation into who might be doing this? It is very concerning. Someone posted on FB today Our watchers collected over 40 pigeons in multiple canvassing efforts. We submitted the first collection of over 20 pigeons to the DEC. They are investigating and will hopefully get to the source. Luckily we have not had any new reports of down or dead pigeons in the past two weeks.

This Little Girl Has Been Feeding Crows Since She Was 4. Now They Bring Her Gifts To Say Thankyou. By Evie Zimmerman Eight-year-old Gabi Mann lives in Seattle. She has a very special group of friends who regularly lavish her with small gifts in return for the kindness she has been showing them since she was four years old. Only this group of friends isn't made up of her peers, instead it consists of the local crow population! Gabi was 4 years old when she began to feed the crows in her neighbourhood... ...As the crows finished their food, small trinkets began to appear on their feeding platform - Trinkets just big enough to be carried in a bird's mouth. Full story and pics at the link... http://www.trendingly.com/gabi-and-the-crows Cute story!

Windsor — Ambassador BridgeThere is very sad news today about Gwennis, a daughter of Freddie and Voltaire at the Ambassador Bridge, born in 2013. From the Canadian Peregrine Fpundation: Marilyn Weller Reports:
Greetings Friends,
There was a posting on Facebook out of Ohio, about a female Peregrine from Windsor that perished from injuries sustained from what may have been an encounter with power lines. I am sad to report that Gwennis has died from her injuries which included multiple fractures and burns. The Facebook group is for “Back to the Wild” from Castalia, Ohio and they have posted a couple photos on their group site.
She had a great start and a couple of great years in the sky. Sure wish she had longer to enjoy the skies though.
Gwennis was a hatchling from the nest of Voltaire and Freddie in 2013. At the time of her banding, she was estimated to be 29 to 30 days old and weighed 1016 gms. She was always a big female and we here in Windsor, certainly enjoyed hours of watching her learn to fly with her hatch mates, Hercules and Tecumseh.
She was named in honour of Windsor Watch Coordinators Gwen and Dennis Patrick. We are very sad to learn this news and wanted to pass this on to you all. \ Poor little Gwennis. I wonder what actually happened to cause her to be so badly injured. https://www.facebook.com/Back-To-The-Wild-Castalia-Ohio-119099281488306/ Maybe she was chasing prey when she hit power lines? Very sad to read. Fly free, Gwennis.

Glad to hear that Pigott is around. Wish the cams were active . . .
The cams were knocked out and destroyed by a storm last year and it's estimated the cost to replace will be in the $4000 range. They don't have any fund raisers like we do so now they're trying to figure out how to raise the money. Hopefully they can find a way to get the money to replace it.

Utica dead pigeon mystery gets some answers Submitted photo The state Department of Environmental Conservation said late Tuesday that the department's Wildlife Health Unit in Delmar examined dead pigeons found in the Utica area in late November and determined the likely cause of death to be Avitrol, a pesticide used for nuisance pigeons and spread on whole corn. By S. Alexander Gerould Posted Jan 13, 2016 at 10:55 AM Updated at 11:31 AM
Those searching for the reasons why multiple pigeons and other birds have been found dead in the downtown-Utica area have gotten some answers. The state Department of Environmental Conservation said late Tuesday that the department's Wildlife Health Unit in Delmar examined dead pigeons found in the Utica area in late November and determined the likely cause of death to be Avitrol, a pesticide used for nuisance pigeons and spread on whole corn. The pesticide was detected in corn eaten by the pigeons, according to the department, whose Bureau of Pesticides is conducting a further investigation into the matter. Questions about was killing birds in the area were first raised after Matthew Perry, a Utica Peregrine Falcon Project founder, and others found more than 20 dead pigeons and other birds last fall in the Hopper Street area and other downtown locations. Several of the birds had corn in their throats and bills and around their bodies, Perry said at the time. Perry said Wednesday that, of the roughly 10 birds tested, two tested positive for Avitrol. The other birds tested for an unspecified poison that isn't known yet, he said. About 40 deceased birds were found altogether, Perry said. While they were concerned for the dead birds, Perry said the group's “main concern” was how the city's pair of peregrine falcons, who rely on pigeons and other birds as a main source of food, could be impacted. “The best pigeon control that Utica has is currently a family of peregrine falcons,” Perry said. “They can take over 300 pigeons per year. As long as you have them in town and you're not threatening them, then they can do a good job at controlling pigeon populations.”

Thanks for posting, Kris. 'Tis the season for the roosting crows, I guess. I used to wait for the bus in the evening right across Clinton Avenue from the crows' roost at Washington Square Park. And yes, I would say 30,000 is an accurate figure. They're fascinating creatures to watch en masse like that. They're extremely social with each other, packing each tree in the park. Every few minutes a few of them would cross from one tree to another and begin chattering with the crows in the next tree. It's as if each tree was holding a committee meeting of some sort, and the traveling birds were reporting to other committees, or perhaps spying on them.
The only thing I didn't like was the mess they created on the sidewalks. I didn't relish my crunchy walk to the bus stop, where I couldn't sit on the bench there and wait, because I'd be sitting in crow poo.
Didn't a Rochester church have a bunch of trees cut down a couple years ago because Crows roasted on them and the big poo problem?
