Skye Has Mishap and is Brought to Rehabilitator

Sometime last night in the early evening – probably between 6:00 and 7:00 PM, Skye, the 2nd of this year’s Peregrine chicks to fledge, met with an accident. He was found standing in the parking lot of the State Office Building with his wing drooping. After capture he was brought to a local Wildlife Rehabilitator. A cursory examination revealed nothing obviously wrong with his wing, but he awaits x-rays and a more thorough examination. At this point we are hopeful that he will be able to be released back into the Downtown territory, but only time will tell. Though official Fledge Watch had ended only the day before, there were observers on the scene, but none of them saw the incident that brought Skye down.

Fledgling problems all over this year.   Sad

From FB:A response to a question if there was any news about the fledglings.

Yes! We just received an update yesterday: Max our male chick seems to have taken flight, and we haven't seen him for about a week. The remaining two females: Charlotte and Penelope have had a few issues: one seems to have broken her collar bone and the other one was caught up in a net on a nearby building, and seems to have gotten a little thin. Both have now been taken to Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery and are safely recuperating.

Another bad day for our beautiful Lilly Sad
June 29, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

While out spot checking this evening, I had to rescue Lilly once again Sad  She was found in the bushes at ICICI, facing her nest, her home.  Covered in mud, and I was fairly certain, hurt.  I called Mark, and as it was fairly late, Irma and I took her up to Kortright for him to examine her.  After spraying the dirt off her with a fine mist from a spray bottle, she perked up abit but was dragging her wing Sad.  Mark hydrated her, fed her, and said she should be seen by Toronto Wildlife vet who had looked after her fractured keel, and that he would take her tomorrow morning.

Sad day-we lost our Lilly May 8, 2015-June 30, 2015
June 30, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon
Cathy Kerr Reports:

I am broken hearted to report that Lilly’s injury to her wing were catastrophic and she had to be put down–this was the best thing to be done for her–she would never fly again.  And she is a peregrine, and that is what they do.  From the day she was born-which Mark & I had the joy of seeing back on May 8-to the banding-to her rescue-to watching her in the nest with her siblings-to seeing her returned again to her family and then taking her first flight and many more after that-my team & I have loved every minute of it. She was a real beauty.  She will be missed.

Soar high little one.

Great news for them this year!  Strange so many places I follow or read about that their fledglings hang around the nest site way after fledging yet ours never seem to. Usually, once they leave, that's it in ever seeing them there again.
Except for last year here in Rochester.  That 2014 quartet was tight.  They all came back to the nestbox every night to sleep for several nights after fledging.  I think part of that was because the length of time between the first Mercury's fledge and Tesh's accidental fledge was considerable, and the fact that Nor'easter was injured coming back to the nestbox and Nettie stayed with him there for a few days.  Sadly, the only one who came back to the nestbox this year, even for a brief visit, was our dear Bronx.

i guess I don't remember that they came back after everyone was healed and gone.  I did think of Bronx when I wrote my post..his last goodbye.  Sad

Poor Orion.  She had been away from the nest at a rehab site for a week (I couldn't find the reason why..I thought it was because she had fledged and grounded) and I read on Saturday that she had been placed back in the box.  Sadly, her mother Astrid, never accepted her after her return.

Orion Returns to a Mixed Welcome
June 28, 2015 by Matt Perry Leave a Comment

After being absent from the Downtown breeding site for just over a week, Saturday morning, Orion, the youngest of this season’s brood, was brought back and released at the nestbox. Things didn’t go smoothly. Putting Orion in through the back of the nestbox worked like a charm, but Astrid, who was already quite perturbed for some unknown reason, went ballistic. She dove at the box again and again, which served to get the entire family (minus Orion) agitated and flying in tight circles around the bank building. So it was a swooping swarm of frenzied raptors that greeting Orion’s return. Astrid’s alarm chatter was nearly incessant and it put everyone’s nerves on edge – birds and falcon watchers alike. Orion spent her first hour home backed up into the box and ducking each time Astrid swooped close. By an hour later the parents, Comet and Skye, were all back on the State Office Building and some semblance of peace and quiet returned to the canyon. Later on Ares landed on the nest box and got a close look at his daughter. He couldn’t stay long, but he was obviously not looking at her like an intruder. After that, Comet and Skye returned to the box together. This was the first time all 3 siblings had been together since Comet inadvertently fledged about 11 days before. The three birds seemed fine together and spent over an hour loafing on the box’s perches and side verandas. Soon Orion was causal enough to preen and practice flapping. She even started hopping up onto the roof of the nestbox.  Later on in the day after a successful midair food exchange from Ares to Comet, Comet brought the prey over to the nest box and Orion grabbed it. Was that an intended feeding? Unfortunately as the day wore on, Astrid didn’t lighten up at all. She resumed diving at Orion in a manner consistent with an attempt to drive away an intruder. Time will tell if Astrid will change her behavior toward Orion. In the end, the acceptance shown by the other members of the family will mean little if she continues to reject her. If the rejection continues the chances of a mishap will increase and the need to have Fledge Watch volunteers on hand will be greater.

In some ways I imagine it may be harder and lonelier for long distance cam watchers when a loss is suffered.   crying

Very true...having no one to share it with is tough. I tried to tell one person why I was a sobbing mess when we got the news about Bronx and they just didn't get it...no, he wasn't just a bird...

I had Bill to talk to but he's emotionless when it comes to the Falcons and my friends could care less..think I'm nuts to get so involved.

I follow that nest and was devastated to know the Eagle took the babies...how horrifying for them.  I also think of dear Bronx every single day and how frightened he must have been, not being able to move his legs, fly, get out of the situation.  Losing him was devastating but I'm just so thankful that Rich found him or we might never have known where he was or what happened.  I really wanted the Disney story....

We have been very lucky here to have mostly gotten the Disney story...Bronx is the first I've lost this young...still very hard...

My first too, Ei..wasn't fair, just 5 days out and flying so well. I was really looking forward to seeing the 3 flying, playing together.

Update on Silver:

The Peregrine Falcon we received yesterday is settling in at our Wildlife Center. Upon initial exam, the bird was found to be dehydrated and thin. There are missing flight feathers, but new feather growth is apparent. In addition, one of the bird's feet is noticeably weaker than the other. The bird has an appointment with a specialty vet on Tuesday & we will pass along any information that is discovered at that time. To be clear, our hope & goal is to rehabilitate the falcon so that it may eventually be returned to the wild. Long term goals, treatments, and plans will be developing as our Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators work alongside the Veterinarian."

This morning, the PA Game Commission brought a Peregrine Falcon fledgling from its nest in Oakland to our Wildlife Center for care. We have admitted it for medical evaluation, which will occur over the next several days. The bird does not have appropriate flight feathers and may have some neurological issues. It will remain under our care until decisions can be made in the bird's best interest. The Animal Rescue League will provide further updates on the falcon's medical condition and the future treatment plan once this is determined. If you would like to donate to help support the care of the falcon, please do so by visiting our website at www.animalrescue.org/donate and type “Falcon” in the notes section.
