We named her Kat. Jim Verhagen named her Ivy. So I call her Ivy Kat.

Works for me!  She's beautiful!   heart

All by myself,
Don't wanna be, all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don't wanna live, all by myself anymore

That's how I felt on fledge watch today.  Thank goodness our girl has her parents quite close. She still has a bit down on her head, but she will be flying very soon.  The important buildings have been alerted that she will be flying soon.

She was very content in the shade and wind today.

I see they call her Ivy...did you name her?  She's done so well with Athena and Six...hope she continues to be safe through fledging and after!

Not a good cam to watch right now!

June 20, 2014 — bald eagle, Eagle, eaglecam, Maine, nature

From the info that I’ve seen, it appears that the larger eaglet has attacked and killed or severely wounded the smaller eaglet.  (update: just after I posted this, the smaller eaglet was seen getting up!)  Watchers note that the smaller one may have also injured the eye of the larger one during the fight.  I did not see it happen, but those that did see the fight,  say it was the most horrific and gruesome thing they have witnessed on a nestcam.  In the past week, food deliveries have diminished, with virtually no food delivered in the last day, and no food for the smaller one for the last 3 days.   This nest has had too much tragedy in the last few years, and this is so hard to see happen.    link to cam (provided with caution):

Good grief these eaglets are brutal!!  Shocked

Everyone commenting sound like the one has died and I hear/see the other crying out for food.  I wonder if something has happened to the parents...why aren't they at least feeding the larger one?

!!! Fledge Watch - Day 4
June 19, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills

Mark Nash Reports:

Thursday June 19th - 2014
A good fourth day on the Duncan Mills fledge watch with little Cosmo finally being located on the east upper roof elevation of 240 Duncan Mill Road and made seven short flights while chasing his parents around for food, and Little Hayes finally coming to the ground, (and after a short but intense foot chase around both buildings - on both sides of the street), was successfully scooped-up and later released back to the nest building roof top.

The other two Duncan Mills hatchlings still remain lounging around on the nest ledge by the end of the day.

By 11am, the day was not sounding so good as the calls came in from two other fledge watch groups with some very sad news of mortalities. Rob from the Etobicoke fledge watch team reported that one of their young fledglings had slammed into the glass windows of one of the office towers and was killed on impact.

Tony from the Sun Life Kitchener Waterloo fledge watch team called shortly after Rob to report that one of their young fledglings had also flown into the glass windows of the office tower and also died on impact as a result of that collision. By early afternoon, the third bad news call came in from Tony at the Kitchener Waterloo fledge watch team explaining that a second KW fledgling had just been killed as a result of an impact with a building.

For us here at the Duncan Mills fledge watch, the news was, thank-goodness much better, but I must admit, I was hesitant to answer the next 14 calls that came in over the balance of the day.

Over the course of the day, little Hayes stumbled off the ledge yet again and fluttered down to a lower window ledge elevation (now only two stories from the ground) as he continued to ledge hop from one end of the building to the other while screaming most of the day at his parents for attention and food. Several of the 220 tenants came across the street to speak with us asking if there was anything that they could do for him as his screaming was almost unbearable to listen to for many of the occupants inside the building.

I gotta admit, his constant whaling throughout the day was quite un-nerving and you couldn’t help but feel sorry for the little guy.

Quest on the other hand was , spent a large part of her afternoon ignoring him, and actually spent a large part of her afternoon lounging around on the nest ledge with the Stormy and Rainbow on the nest ledge. She actually spent several hours laying down in front of the nest box with them in quite a heart warming family session of touching beaks with each other.

Sky, (the resident adult male) on the other hand, spent most of his afternoon in the shade in typical peregrine fashion, on the top of the window sil under the roof overhang on the corner of the 240 Duncan Mill road building.

By early evening,, around 8pm- (just around the falcon follies time when peregrine usually get frisky and start flying again), all of the action took place. Little Hayes finally came down to the ground and only after several foot chases and three ground rescue attempts later, was finally scooped up from the ground in the carrier safe and sound.

Little Cosmo was finally located on the upper roof elevation on the east side of 240 Duncan Mill Road after not being seen for almost two days since his release back to the 220 nest building roof top.

Cosmo was the super star of the day, as he made several very strong flights (actually eight flights) from the roof tops of 220, 240, 225 and back again while chasing both his parents around for food. He was finally rewarded and fed by Quest on the roof top of 225.

Sky did bring in several pigeons today and Quest quickly snatched his food deliveries and fed the two nest box hatchlings during the falcon follies period. Little Hayes was the only one that didn’t get food today. As a matter of fact, Hayes didn’t get food yesterday as well but not to be worried, as he is still dealing with allot of baby fat, clearly evident after the physical examination I completed prior to his release back to the roof this evening.

Stay tuned…………..

SAD NEWS
We received word last night that COMTEC, one of the four offspring hatched at the Macomb County Building in May had a flight collision across the street at the Administration Building. She broke her neck and was retrieved by Animal Control. They very considerately took photos of her band numbers and send them to us for identification. Thank you to all who assisted in her retrieval and reporting of the news. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel named COMTEC in honor of Macomb County’s new communication center.

It never ends! Fly Free

This is Hathor, Beauty's sister, and Nick's daughter.  How sad, so many lost this year. Fly free, COMTEC sorrow

!!! Sad news today
June 19, 2014 - Kitchener - Sun Life Centre

Lisa Reh Reports:

June 19, 2014

It is with deep regret and heavy hearts that the fledge watch team reported today that Soleil had a tragic and fatal accident this morning. Janice reported seeing Soleil and Merry on the 5th floor roof on the Park Street corner at 8:15. Soleil was very anxious to get moving with lots of head bobbing and wing flapping. She “hopped-flew” along the edge of the roof to the King Street corner. Pippin was also seen doing a few circles around the rooftop. Just before 9:00 a.m. one of our tower watchers contacted Tony that another fledgling had hit the window. It was Soleil, our largest fledgling at banding (yellow tape). Perhaps she was trying to help Merry back up the top of the roof. Rest in peace, little sister.

Merry is still on the 5th floor and was on the smoke stack at last report at 9:15 a.m. The fledge watch team is keeping a close watch on him and are concerned that he may have a wing injury due to his mishaps with the windows. The good news is that he is still flying however his flights have not had much height. Keep trying Merry – you are named after one of the bravest hobbits!

From Carly on BCAW:

Picked up Pierre's body on the lower rooftop this morning. He was fine at breakfast, flew and hit the reflective glass and died instantly.

Skyla is lost somewhere really low - she was in a tree all day yesterday and then flew to a lower roof but can't get a fix on her at all. No sign of Sunni at all since Pierre died and OC is out searching but no vocalization or signs of anyone.

Just popped into the office for quick update and to cool off. Forgot to update on that 'intruder', he's not been back since the day he and OC tangoed.

Back out I go.

Fly free, little Pierre.  You're with your brother, Heaton, now. sorrow
