DEC has installed a new nestbox at the Dunkirk NPG (?) facing southeast on tallest stack by the walkway. A female has been hanging around there for quite a while and was present when box was installed. According to the DEC, there is a possibility that the falcon could be Jean, ID'd by Joyce some time ago. Jean and a tiercel had been hanging around the old grain elevators nr Gallgher Beach, small boat harbor, Buffalo waterfront. 2013, after a possible failed nest there, they switched to Holcim, next bldg to the south. The female laid one egg in the Holcim nestbox but the male did not return, so she abandoned the egg. If any watchers want to visit, just go to the end of the dock, turn slightly to the left, there it is! (Map on FBPP) Wonder who her mate will be this spring... Great news!

We are currently testing various cameras, last week there temporarily placed on the tower of the mortar. On the initial findings, we are very satisfied with both picture and sound are distorted and the camera offers many opportunities to care. Beautiful images of the roof and peregrine falcons Cooperation with Alticom, Rovitech, Pager Services and Securicon going very well, there will be special fasteners applied to the outside cams and the harness goes soon through the roof to the computer. There are some technical and financial issues that may be. Deserve our attention and the next time there will be many activities carried out but we are confident that 2014 special and beautiful images shown. Excellent!

China Departure Postponed for Giant Pandas Xi Lan and Po Friday, November 15, 2013
After reviewing the results of pre-shipment physical examinations on giant pandas Xi Lan, 5, and Po, 3, the Zoo Atlanta Animal Management and Veterinary Teams, in consultation with colleagues at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, have made the decision to postpone the pandas’ departure for China, previously scheduled for November 24, 2013.
Both giant pandas are healthy, but the journey to China will involve a lengthy trip and a period of transition in their new home. Once in China, the bears will acclimate themselves to a new habitat and will adapt to a new diet, including the variety of unfamiliar bamboo species native to China. A temporary delay in Xi Lan’s and Po’s departure would allow the giant pandas to develop sufficient reserves to make this transition.
“We’re excited about the opportunities Xi Lan and Po will have once they arrive in Chengdu, but we want to ensure that both are in optimal condition for travel and transition,” said Raymond B. King, President and CEO. “Their welfare is paramount to us and our colleagues in China who are in agreement that a stay of a few more months is the right choice for the animals.”
Pre-shipment physicals are an important part of the process for animals traveling from Zoo Atlanta to new homes. Routinely performed by the Veterinary Team on individuals scheduled to move to other facilities, these are comprehensive examinations that analyze an animal’s total bill of health while ensuring that those preparing to travel will be able to adapt successfully to new circumstances and diets.
The farewell celebration planned for Saturday, November 16 will continue as scheduled. Activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Panda Veranda.
Xi Lan and Po are the second and third offspring of giant panda pair Lun Lun and Yang Yang. Lun Lun’s youngest offspring, 4-month-old twins Mei Lun and Mei Huan, recently began
living with their mother full-time and will soon be making their public debut in the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation Giant Panda Conservation Center.
Stay tuned for updates on Xi Lan’s and Po’s revised departure date; updates will be posted on zooatlanta.org as they are available.

November 13, 2013 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre Kathy Reports: In all the years I’ve been watching the resident falcons here - I don’t ever remember seeing both adults perched on the web cam at the same time..until this morning. When I came out both were there side by side having a conversation which I quickly came to realize was a ‘you move, no you move - conversation. You can guess who lost that arguement…Jack flew out in a semi circle to the nest box where he is now pouting! Last Friday I happened to see O’Connor coming in with a ‘duck’ - yes a duck! We’ve seen them up in the cache from time to time but I’ve never actually witnessed either of them bringing one up to the ledge. A co worker and I were out on a break when we noticed a really large bird in the distance flying really low - my first thought was holy cow that’s a huge bird and then she got closer and I realized it was O’Connor with a really large prey in her talons. She was having a difficult time maintaining altitude but managed to vear off towards the towers and it looked like she was going to slam right into one when suddenly she reared up - honestly it was the most amazing sight ever! Then she proceeded to circle around the building to try and gain height - which she did but she was still about 5 stories short of a ledge. Jack, who up until then I didn’t even notice as I was focused on O’Connor and quite worried she wouldnt’ make it, was on the ADP sign and dove down as she came around and got under neath her to help guide her upwards. They both flew around the building and I ran through the concourse as no one came back to the front. By the time I got out to the back - there she was on one of the ledges..looking quite proud of herself as she started to prepare - ‘lunch’! On Sunday we had a powerful wind storm in Toronto - and as a result on Monday I recieved a call from Mark Nash informing me that someone had reported a falcon down on the property. I quickly went to security who took me out to check on the bird and it turned out to be an adult Red Tail, a female judging from the size of her and her talons. She was lying just a few feet from the glass on the ground in a construction area and there were no marks on her. I suspect she likely crashed into the building at high speed due to the wind. As no one saw anything we can’t really say whether or not the resident pair were trying to steer her out but that could have been the case and due to the high winds she would have a hard time controlling herself. Posted on November 13, 2013 10:58 am Another duck bites the dust! That's why they're called Duck Hawks.

Nervous step-grandparents… Published 11 November, 2013
Orange is experiencing its first decent rainfall for a long time – great for the farms, crops, gardens etc. The downside is that it’s brought a lightning storm along for the ride, and with a nearby hit just minutes ago we’re awaiting another direct hit on the tower itself. And to make things even more nervy we’re watching Beau sitting on the microwave dish around the side, in the rain, oblivious to the imminent threat of getting hot feet and the real chance of the tower conductor about 15 feet from him being used to earth the sky to the ground!! We can’t find a broom big enough to scare him away!! The tower conductor was hit 5 years ago when Swift was sitting on her first egg (raised in this eyrie anyway), 3 days before little Migii hatched; how anyone survived up there that day we don’t know, but Migii was a healthy, happy and well-fed eyas, much to everybody’s surprise.
Apologies for problems in opening the photos -just noticed the issue. Also have same problem loading up new photos in the back-end. We’ll have that fixed soon as we find a new photo gallery module!
