Saw on FB: Sad

Bird Cams
There is sad news to share today. Though we aren’t sure that they are ā€œours,ā€ two juvenile hawks were found on campus this morning. One had died, possibly overnight in the terrible thunder storms that we had, and the other has a badly injured foot and extensive abrasions to both legs. We are currently awaiting autopsy results for what may have killed the one hawk. The injured juvenile is currently being treated for his injuries. It is unclear how he was injured, though it may have been caused by a prey animal fighting back. He is currently resting quietly and on a regimen of pain medication and antibiotics. We are in touch with the veterinary staff treating the bird and will give an update as soon as we know more.

Pictures from Sunday of Quest and Skye

August 09, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills

Tracy Simpson Reports:

As promised, some pictures of Quest and Skye taken on Sunday during our visit.

The first three are of Quest and the last three are of Skye.  Both birds were relaxed in the morning sun and comfortable with each others presence.  As you can see in the photos, Skye is sitting next to the nest box and he has been accepted being there.

Osprey Diary 7th August: Fond Farewell For Now
Posted on August 7, 2013 by rangeremma

Well, it looks like our beloved female osprey has left for the long journey southwards on her autumn migration. She has not been seen on the nest or around the loch since mid yesterday and we are now fairly certain she has left for the year. When the wind dropped and backed around to a north easterly yesterday afternoon, she will have sensed a tail wind suitable to aid her journey southwards.

It seems like only a couple of weeks ago we were welcoming her back in spring, with the whole breeding season ahead of her. She arrived in fine form back on March 30th, to a great welcome for her 23rd year at this nest. She then kept us all waiting an extra week or so for egg laying, then surprised us with a truly remarkable four eggs. She displayed her usual tender and expert parental care and has raised this years chick Blue YZ to fledging as a healthy and very confident young bird who we hope will have every advantage for the journey ahead.

So far in her breeding ā€˜career’ this remarkable bird has laid 66 eggs and raised 50 chicks to fledging at this nest. She has taught us all so much about osprey behaviour and has surprised us more than a few times, not least when she became so very ill in 2010 and managed to pull through when all the experts had told us to expect the worst.

At her advanced age ( her late 20′s) we are all aware that every year she makes the migration back to Perthshire successfully may be her last. She is already so far  past ā€˜normal’ life expectancy and there are so many hazards and so much luck involved in migration, we know the odds are now against her realistically .   So we all fervently hope but don’t dare count on her returning next year to set yet another record for UK ospreys.

We all wish her  and all the birds migrating from UK to southern wintering grounds luck, fair winds and safe journeys.

Now for the hard part of this falcon "job" that I have of updating everyone. The news isn't good for one of this year's brood - Bailey was found dead inside a power plant in Posey County. Apparently it had gotten in a warm in the plant.  We all know that it is hard for such young falcons to make it past their first year but comfort is that she fledged successfully and tasted the freedom of the skies. Interestingly enough, a DNR nest box has been at that plant for years but never used. This pic is of Bailey at banding time.

Fly free, young Bailey.  sorrow

As per Mathew, one of Jack and TR Mom's sons has been taken to Toronto Wildlife after being rescued on the ground.

Aug 6, 2013 - Catching up since the weekend

Over the weekend we found a bird hopping around on the ground. He didn't look overly bad but there was definitely something wrong with one wing, and his failure to get airborne resulted in his capture.

Working with the MNR, I was advised to take the juvenile to Toronto Wildlife Centre in downsview, and so I did. I have been told by TWC that they won't likely contact me given how busy they are, however I have been assured by the MNR that if/when they find out more info I will be told.

I'll keep you posted, but as you know with injuries to bird wings, these things aren't simple.

Sorry to hear this, Carly. Hope it'll be OK.
