It is very sad that Dorothy and E2 have lost one of their little chicks. Poor little baby. It is also sad that the other eggs have not hatched for this great pair of peregrines.
I know E2 is Dorothy's grandson and wonder if incestuous relationships result in higher incidences of birth defects in birds like it does in humans. Polly and Algo in Montreal are mates/siblings and I think their nest failed 2 yrs ago and their eyas died last year, if I remember right. I remember someone saying it doesn't matter if they are related but now I'm thinking they may have to re-think that! Very strange things happening so far in the egg world! seizures make me think of neurotoxins, maybe something in the food chain. Hard to tell with out tests and I doubt if that will happen.. You know I said to MAK last night, there may be something out there they are eating, which in turn affects the eggs. A new study may be needed. I said it felt like DDT all over again. Jeez, I hope not. Kate says it's Dorothy's old age.

OH BOY, I think he jumped out of the box. he was up on the ledge, no Mrs H yet, then suddenly the cams were turned off. They all think he fell again. Stupid me to watch this too! OK, the story is, he was just about to jump, so they turned the cams off, went out, grabbed him and put him with another Mom GHO, who also has adopted owletts. Her name is Baum! PHEW!!! I saw him on the ledge and couldn't watch! I saw on chat that Baum would foster if this didn't work so glad they placed him there!

I am so sorry about the loss of the littlest chick. Poor little one didn't have a chance. The Wilmington nest also had five eggs; four hatched. The fourth chick was not being fed, and was removed from the nest to be cared for until he/she is stronger. At the James River Bridge, the third chick was not fed, and was left to die. I would have liked to see that little one taken out of the nest, cared for and given a chance to survive. It has been done before successfully at this nest. I knew about the Wilmington nest but didn't know about James River. So sad-they've had issues at this site before about lack of food. There were questions at one time of the male possibly having 2 mates-don't know if that's true though.
