Sad news-Lincoln and Roger_Paw's blogs today say that the female seen since Aug. 20th with Pale Male is not Zena who has been missing for quite a while now.  The new female (if he choses her for a mate) would be Pale Male's 3rd in a year (Lima, Zena and ?) and his 8th total.

Surreal...he's been conversing with & publishing his Pale Male & family photos through Donna Browne's Palemaleirregulars blog...and I've been following along & enjoying his photos...

...you just never know...

I've been following his posts and pics on that blog too!  I was shocked to read that this was the same guy!  Lincoln posted about him on his blog yesterday:  "The man we called SUIT"   http://palemale-store.stores.yahoo.net/

PANDA CUB: 704 GRAMS
By Megan Owen – August 23, 2012

All is well!
This morning, at about 7:15, we had our first opportunity to examine Bai Yun’s newest cub. For the past week or so, Bai Yun has developed a regular habit of leaving the den to get breakfast in her sun room. Today, we took advantage of Bai Yun’s breakfast outing to get our first real look at the cub. The exam lasted only 3 minutes, but in that time our veterinarians were able to determine that the 25-day-old cub is healthy and weighs in at a robust 704 grams (24.8 ounces or 1.55 pounds). For comparison, Yun Zi weighed 1,259 grams (2.8 pounds) at 29 days (see Baby’s First Exam), Zhen Zhen weighed 1,020 grams or 2.2 pounds at 26 days, and Su Lin was 618 grams (22 ounces) at 22 days. The cub was quiet at the outset of the exam, but soon enough gave us a great display of its strong lungs!

Veterinarians were able to do a quick, yet thorough, exam of the cub’s limbs, mouth, ears, and more, and we’re happy to report that everything looks good! While it may be a few more weeks before we know what the cub’s sex is, or whether or not it has webbed toes or a spot on its tail, today was an important step in confirming that this cub has the most important quality that a panda cub can have: good health!

Bai Yun also showed us her best maternal behavior. She began eating her breakfast away from the cub, in the sun room, as usual, when the cub emitted a loud squawk during the exam. Bai Yun made it clear that she wanted to return to the den to be with the cub, so the exam was halted. Her maternal behavior continues to be exemplary and, clearly, she is doing a great job taking care of her latest cub. We are all so lucky to see this amazing mother in action!

Aug 24th

There’s been a fair amount of activity today with both Blue 44 and his dad flying around and an intruder female being seen off by the male (well sort of he did his usual dive bombing then playing on the thermals). Our chick seems in no hurry to migrate or become fully independent but given that up until yesterday his dad was still bringing him three or four big fish a day that’s hardly surprising. Why do it yourself when it’s being handed to you? Today however he’s only been given one fish, despite repeated calling to his father so we may be seeing our male beginning his migration preparation as he reduces how much fish he brings in.

Talking of fish deliveries I’ve had a special request for an update fish chart, so here it is bang up to date with today’s lunchtime Perch. I’ve changed the format from a pie chart to a column chart to make it easier to read

We also received this fantastic picture of Blue 44 in flight which we had to share with you and thanks to Peter Beveridge for letting us use it.

Love the pic of Blue44!  Thanks for the report!

Not that I know of Donna.  We were concerned she'd make a play for either our site or TR Mom's site given they are both adjoining the site she was displaced from.  But as far as I know she came straight for ours.

She certainly seems happy at our site.  The site she came from had a lot of human activity on the rooftop and she didn't appreciate it very much.  Not that most falcons do but she seemed extra sensitive to human presence.

At our site, in comparison, they very rarely go out on the roof at all so she's quite calm these days.  It's nice to see her so relaxed.  I have to chuckle every time I see her out there dozing on the web cam because I remember Tracy's stories of her but she seems so tame now.. angel.  When the kids were here she certainly was crazy protective but now she's just enjoying the peace I'm thinking.  She also seems okay - so far - with Jack not being around a lot and sharing him.

I can't wait until they get the new cam up, it will be great to watch her with babies next year  handshake

Thanks Carly, you have sooooo many nests, not sure how you guys keep up with them all.  thumbsup
I too thought there was a falcon found on a roof top that was supposed to have been Angel. Maybe I am confusing it with someone else or visa versa. If so who was that?

Stella, in Buffalo, was found on a rooftop.  Maybe that's who you're thinking of?

She looks great, thanks Kris. I wish her luck with the falconer.  heart

I do too! Dutch Eagle Fan said that they hope to be at DeMortel for S2's release so the report from that should be interesting.  Hope all works out.

I sure as heck pray they plan to release her far from there, she will head home if she remembers it but at least coming in from afar would give her time to see there is another female there and size up her options.

My hope is that she doesn't remember it and goes on to find a new home.  I know that's not popular opinion but the new female here is pretty tough and younger than she is and I'd hate to see her hurt again after all she's been through.

I do too but I've read somewhere that, because DeMortel was her home, they plan on releasing her close to there. I know Pa has bonded with a new female and with all the time and money spent to fix, heal and rehab S2, it sounds crazy to me to release her there and risk getting her severely injured or killed.  She might or might not remember DeMortel but at least give her a better chance for survival.

Update on S2 (translated by Dutch Eagle Fan on BCAW):

A few weeks later than planned, due to the extremely hot weather and the fact that S2 still was moulting, she was taken to the falconer yesterday.
Her colour and tracking station bands were removed but will be placed back when she is released. She seemed quite calm during the whole procedure.
Her moult is almost complete, just two hand- and two tail-feathers are not yet fully grown in, which is quite remarkable for a bird in captivity. She looks very healthy and strong.
Now she has to get used to the falconer, accept him as her source of food. Then the training can begin to build up her strength and make sure that she can use her injured wing without any problems.

I have some photos on my old hard drive that I mean to hook up and copy over to this new PC someday and I have some Mark took on my work PC I think...real photos I mean taken with a good camera, which I sadly don't own.

Otherwise all I have are photos I took off the webcam big screen in our lobby back in 2009 when the camera was last active.  YOu can't see her salmon coloring but you can see how dark her hood is.

Angel had a lot of salmon color on her breast, she also had the dark hood (like Kendal).  Strong Anatum genes in that girl.  When she was wet, her chest would look almost brown from the ground without bins, yet other times she could look really white!  She was quite a beauty..like your own Beauty.  wub2

I don't think I've ever seen a pic of her-just Jack. I would love to see what she looked like-a beauty, I'm sure!
