Has there been any decision when banding day will be this year?
It has not been announced yet I know but just wondered if those in the know had any idea when it might be happening. Don't they usually band them at about 24-27 days of age? It would be the DEC that makes the final decision so I guess we wait and see when they give people here the heads up. People were asking on BCAW and I've been wondering.

"Hi all, I just returned from a week at the nest, and although the news right now is rather tough to deal with, I would like to add my observations from the past week. I would like all those to know who cannot visit the nest that D13 and D14 are thriving, flying free, and enjoying their eagle life. Mom and Dad continue to teach them every minute and provide the tools to allow them to be as successful as possible. I was able to witness, in a private show of sorts, D13 and D14 spend hours together by the falls at the back of the hatchery, preening and gazing at each other while the sun rose over Decorah, looking healthy and very strong. Mom and Dad are as beautiful as ever and more skilled than you would believe, providing food when needed and continued life lessons. I just wanted to reassure everyone that this family will continue, and I am happy that they are now better protected from events like this in the future. Please do what you can in your own locale to make a difference Here is a shot of D13 and D14 as the sun rose on Monday July 2 for you to enjoy - Dave" From FB Beautiful pic of the 2 remaining Eaglets.

July 03, 2012 - Toronto - Don Mills
CPF Volunteer Reports:
Don Mills report - July 3, 2012 I decided to do another check at the Don Mills site today after work hopefully to get more pictures taken of the family. Arrived around 6:00pm and found no one at first.
Then a couple of juveniles came in from the north side and landed on the roof of Harlequin. Because of the overcast and the position of the fledglings, I could not see the leg bands to identify them. But judging from the size, one very likely is Blaze since it is so much smaller than the other.
I heard some another falcon calling from the nest and was expecting to find the other fledgling there. To my surprise, it was actually Quest. She was having a great time preening herself.
Just want I was ready to leave, I spot Kendal quietly hiding from the rest of the family perching on a ledge of the Thales building. Winnie

There is also that whole DC wants to feed and Beauty mostly wont let him (probably cause he is so messy. Draw to many flies to baby.) So the boy might be pouting? just a possibility
If he only knew! In 2010 Beauty only allowed Archer to feed Jemison & Callidora 3 times total ever! She's being positively lenient this year. I remember that. Maybe she's more intimidated by DC after all the swooping at her in the beginning and they never had much of a bonding. I think he's more bonded with P. He also appears to be quite assertive for a tiercel. Will be interesting to see if he and P migrate in the fall.

They are doing just fine in terms of food. Don't forget how hot it's been outside, food will go bad really fast in this weather and fresher/moister is better in terms of hydrating the falcons.
Once the kids can thermoregulate, it's not unusual to see both parents hunting for fresh food. This also serves as an early lesson to baby so he can see how food is prepared. Few more weeks he'll have to learn to figure it out on his own.
I know about all of what you said but I was wondering if DC was providing much food for the baby. I was surprised, as others were, when B prepped the food in the box. I don't remember seeing M/K or B/A prepping prey in the box before but I could have seen and forgotten it. It just looked like B killed the bird then brought it to the box to clean (so as not to be away from the eyas too long) after there was no fresh food delivered in early AM the 2 days before. Is this behavior something that you've seen at your sites? Good to see DC bring food in this afternoon though!

Does anyone else think DC isn't supplying much if any food here? Beauty brought in unprepped food this AM when dad should prep the food before dropping off? Just wondering-hope I'm wrong.
