The little Stone Owl has died! June 25 Ronald Harxen has already announced on the blog for the bird to investigate. Hopefully we get a result at least a little more clarity about what exactly was going on. There was nothing wrong with that owlet. It was perfectly healthy and could have been saved with proper attention to the leg when it was still only a week old and the problem was discovered. The leg could have been "hobbled" and the chick put back with the mother to continue raising. When the leg corrected, the hobbles could have been removed and the chick would have grown normally and fledged to the wild. They have access to band, so why not help the chick?? This is bound to happen again if they do not put some kind of "rough" surface on the nest floor. This problem is usually caused by the chick not being able to gain footing as it crawls around and is unable to keep its feet under it. Just my opinion, but it comes from experience.......successful experience. They could have done something, they should have done something. It's very sad,I couldn't watch it the last week. There was a lot of disagreement on the forum there,so I stopped reading all that. I know people were getting into it as to what should or shouldn't be done. It was tough to watch and read. Like someone said on another Forum-with so many watching, there should have been an intervention but because they choose to not intervene, it's just better to not watch. At least now the little one isn't suffering anymore.

Site Check at Yellow Pages June 29, 2012 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages
Tracy Simpson Reports:
Yesterday I had the opportunity to stop in at the Yellow Pages nest site to check in on Linn and Rueben and their three little fly boys. When I arrived, I had Paul ( Panagiottis ) on top of the dome of the kitchen being very silly as he was going under and then over one of the beams and kept it up for about 10 minutes as if it was a game. Rueben was on the nest building on the southeast corner watching Paul misbehave. Moments later, another juvie flew up and landed on the Investors Group sign on the south side of the building and he had something with him; a little tidbit. After taking a look through the scope, this was Albus showing off his green tape.
Back on the building, Linn had arrived with food and was busily plucking it on the east side of the nest building. Rueben was calling to her like a juvenile and was chasing her for a tidbit. It was almost a courtship type behaviour and was quite cute. With food now in at the nest building, Paul flew from the kitchen to the very top of the nest building where the parents usually go to get a break from the young ones. Ha!! He made a flawless landing!! Albus was on the southeast corner of the nest building now as well after flying over from the Investors Group sign. What I could not find was Eagan, the little male with red tape. I waited and watched as Linn finished off her meal, not sharing this one, and was now sitting on the uppermost southern granite ledge. Still no Eagan. While at this stage, with him flying very well last week and making excellent landings on and around the nest ledge, he is a strong flighted juvenile. Even so, there is still much trouble these kids can get into as they explore the world outside the nest ledge. Typically, this little tyke certainly loves his naps and may have been already fed and asleep. Given that my time there was brief, just over an hour, and I may have missed his feeding and nap, we will err on the side of caution and be out for site checks this weekend to see where Eagan is hiding.

Don Mills - Aerial food exchange June 29, 2012 - Toronto - Don Mills
Ann Brokelman Reports:
Tonight Janice M and I went to see the falcons. At 5:30 we saw Quest and Blaze on the east side of the 404. Blaze was chasing Quest and you could see him screaming. They circled the apartments a couple of times then we lost them.
At the site there was no sound at all. We decided to walk the building. 240 Duncan we found Amora on the east side facing the woods. She pointed us to another peregrine in the sky. Kendal was coming in with food.
Amora took off and flew after dad screaming. Janice and I watched an amazing ariel food exchange at the front of the building. Then Kendal took off with a juvenile chasing him.
We are not sure if the food was dropped by Amora or Mira took off after Kendal.
Amazing amazing amazing

The little Stone Owl has died! June 25 The chick of the owl is deceased. Who the developments of recent times has followed this knows that there for a while was coming. Nevertheless, the final moment is always sad. This weekend we could soon be seeing less. The young no longer begged for food and showed little resilience. The young owl has to include many forces lost by the flawed leg. Ronald Harxen has already announced on the blog for the bird to investigate. Hopefully we get a result at least a little more clarity about what exactly was going on. This has been hard to watch. I knew it wasn't going to end well for the little one.

Another Sad Day At the Lift Bridge June 28, 2012 - Burlington - Lift Bridge Sue McCreadie Reports: Just shortly after we returned from the Lift Bridge this morning, we received an e-mail from our friend Nils Foss about a downed falcon on the Toronto Bound Skyway. At just about the same time as I was reading the e-mail, Marion Nash from CPF called after having received the same report. Bill and I headed out immediately to do a drive by. Of course we found it in the left shoulder where there is no room to stop. We drove the Skyway again to see if we could get a band number. No luck. We headed to the Lift Bridge and with the help of Clare, we were able to get in touch with the Ministry of Transportation who were kind enough to dispatch a vehicle to pick up our bird. When we met up with them on Eastport Drive, we were so sad to see that it was little Port Hope. We want to thank Clare from the Lift Bridge, the Ministry of Transportation and the fellows from TWD Road Maintenance who retrieved little Port Hope. Fly free precious little one. Fly free, little Port Hope.
