Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Discussion / Re: So, What Does Everyone Think about the Rochester Falcons Situation?

Kaver was seen by both Brian and I after the Tiercel was found at UofR. I saw that Tiercel. It was not Kaver. What happened to him will forever be a mystery, especially since he is unbanded. Everyone on this forum has different opinions, different feelings about what happened in the past and what is happening now. It's good that we all "talk" about it. I don't remember reading that you and Brian saw Kaver after the dead tiercel was found. The story I remember was that you were asked to look at the dead tiercel and didn't think it was him but took pics to other watchers to look at to see if they thought it was him. Then one of the watchers said she saw Kaver that same day and had taken a pic, the pic had a timestamp on it that indicated that the picture of Kaver was taken after the dead tiercel had been reported found at U of R.

BY C & C McKees watching a hummer. McKees is Buckeyes great niece!! Thanks to Kris for this! McKees was born in PA in 2009 at the McKees Rocks Bridge. C & C decided to honor her birthplace by giving her that name as she was unnamed. She apparently is Hillary's replacement with Titan. She is also granddaughter to Zenith. Posted in CMNH: Bravo was Mckee's father (her mom was unbanded) and he was born here at TT to Zenith and Bullet in 1999. Bullet was full brother to the Buckeye of Hilliard.

No peregrines to watch here on Sandy Island, in Lake Winnipesaukee, so I have been getting by with loons and mergansers. I love to watch and listen to the loons, especially when going to sleep at light, but the resident flock of nine Common Mergansers provides top notch entertainment several times a day. They do everything in a tight group, staying much closer together than the Mallards. They are diving ducks with serrated bills for catching fish, and are constantly disappearing below the surface and reappearing some distance away. Here they are, just hanging out on their favorite rock.
Paul
Pretty birds, Paul! When I was young, every year I would go with my grandparents on a 2-week vacation to Canada. I loved, even as a kid, the sounds of the loons and watching them out on the lake. Good memories.

The Parrot was crying, the wounded wing, the other not, Troublemaker, was probably referring to the Parrot screaming next door. Google translate in order of appearance on the video! She is a very pretty girl the 1 wing looks bad but the other is good. Time will tell. Thanks for translating! I wondered where all the noises were coming from!

I'm reading Paul's post as Quest was in Schenectady in July 1, 2008 and possibly Harlie is on her own travels since she is 10 later this year than Quest was in 2008. I'm reading Paul as saying that might be why we have not seen Harlie lately. Am I reading this wrong???
That's the way I'm reading it too! I think maybe CarolP is a bit tired after a long week!!! I read it the same as both of you did.

I never knew the falcons would stick around the nest box once the hatching season was over. When might they start thinking migration for the year?
Even after fledging & before migration they will frequent the nest box to strengthen their pair bond. Migration depends on the bird. The males here seem to do the migrating while the females stay year round. The males seem to leave in late September or early October and return late February or early March. There sure hasn't been much pair bonding between A & B lately-at least not visible here. Wonder if he's bonding with her over at KP? BTW-any recent sightings of him lately?

UPDATE on S2
Gemert, Tuesday, August 9 2011
The female Peregrine Falcon S2 is using both wings again. Of course the external fixation on the injured wing is somewhat in the way but the owner of the shelter observed S2 using both wings regularly and seemingly without much problems. This also is proof that the fixation is doing it's job and she probably is not feeling any pain from the broken bones any more. Moving her wings is good for the muscles although it's not enough to get them back to full strength. That will have to be done later with intense training but for now she is hugely improving!

Peregrine chick in S.B. needs rehab 9:00 a.m. EDT, July 30, 2011 SOUTH BEND -- One of the two peregrine falcon chicks that hatched this spring on top of County-City Building is heading to Monroe, Mich., for rehabilitation. Carol Riewe, a local naturalist and raptor rehabilitator, said the young falcon is unable to fly, but it has no signs of broken bones, dislocations or other injuries.
A master falconer in Monroe is volunteering to do the rehabilitation, Riewe said. The bird will be released if it's flight worthy, or placed with an educational group if it's not.
"Not only does she have to fly, she has to fly well enough to hunt," Riewe said. "Otherwise, there's no point in putting her out, because she'll starve."
The other chick that hatched in May is doing well and has been seen flying around downtown, Riewe said.
