Whoa - someone who is attending the Eagle Release just flew in on a helicopter! No joke! These eagles ARE rockstars! Smiley  Found this on FB!

WHAT!!

I think it might have been Ed Clark who came by helicopter.

The eaglets were late-they took a wrong turn & got lost.

NX had to be returned to care.  She wasn't injured-just hot, tired & stressed and couldn't get any altitude.

Poor baby.  Hope she'll be OK from all this hoopla.  Sad

Pefa is not a keyword for reasons previously given.

Carrie gets credit for the close ups of the eagle and bear taken with her new camera.

Excellent job Carrie!

Man, I tried so hard to watch but it just wasn't working for me. Sad I wish them all well.

I couldn't get it to work for me either. Sad  I also wish them a safe life's journey!

Does anyone know how it got the name a "murder" of crows?  Isn't that the word?    I guess I've never looked into that....

“A ‘murder’ of crows is based on the persistent but fallacious folk tale that crows form tribunals to judge and punish the bad behavior of a member of the flock. If the verdict goes against the defendant, that bird is killed (murdered) by the flock. The basis in fact is probably that occasionally crows will kill a dying crow who doesn’t belong in their territory or much more commonly feed on carcasses of dead crows. Also, both crows and ravens are associated with battlefields, medieval hospitals, execution sites and cemeteries (because they scavenged on human remains). In England, a tombstone is sometimes called a ravenstone.â€

Member Siobhan Ruck wrote after a loss in San Francisco in 2009, "Hi's life may have been brief, but every single minute of it was spent as a peregrine falcon. You can't do much better than that..."

Beautifully said.

It's been a very sad year-so many losses in so many places.  I'm so sorry about your Crow family that I know, after talking with you last year, mean a lot to you. May they all fly free!

5892  Other Nature Related Information / General Nature Discussion / Pirate, offspring of Hillary and Titan of Ohio-dies from Trichomoniasis on: 25-Jul-11, 12:07:25 PM

July 20th
Meanwhile, Pirate flew down to the ground near the bike path where there were several large puddles in the dirt. I watched him here for a short time, determining if he would be approachable. He didn't startle with people walking on the path, even with a dog and his owner strolling by. So, I attempted to approach him, but he took off low across the river and landed on the dirt bank underneath the I-90 bridge. After a little while, he flew back across the river, through the trees to the south of Hilliard, under both bridges and into the woods to the north of the I-90 bridge. I saw that he was on a downed tree barely off the ground. So, I tried to retrieve him again, approaching from the back toward his left eye side where I was able to grab him before he flew. Sprayed him with water and hurried him off to the Medina Raptor Center.

Laura provided some urgent care, hydrating him subcutaneously, tube-feeding him, medicating him with an immune system booster and other meds, and cleansing his eye thoroughly. He appears to have a fairly serious case of Trichomoniasis (Frounce) in his mouth and throat, which was likely disrupting his eating and swallowing. This had a distinct odor, which at first I thought was coming from his infected eye, but Laura clarified that it was from the Frounce. After his eye was cleaned, he was able to open it just to a small slit. He was reasonably fiesty, though, and I felt far more optimistic about his chances after Laura provided care than I did when I first got him. At the very least he will be kept comfortable, so we'll have to see what happens from here. Of course, we'll keep providing updates as we know them.

July 24th
Very sorry to report that Pirate didn't make it. His case of Trichomonaisis was apparently very aggressive and was responsible for his eye problem. It caused the bone surrounding the eye and the lower mandible to severely deteriorate, so he had to be euthanized on Thursday. Dr. Riggs believes that the heat probably accelerated the virus.

Kate St. John said on her blog that Stellar was Dorothy's daughter-in-law (in human terms) so Stammy (her mate), must be Beauty's brother.
