SOUTH BEND -- One of the two peregrine falcon chicks that hatched this spring on the County-City Building is missing, according to a volunteer who tracks the birds.

The two chicks, both of which are females, left their nesting box atop the 14-story building about 10 days ago.

Volunteers have seen one of the chicks on the roofs of smaller downtown buildings. They have been unable to locate the other chick since it was seen Thursday morning on a ledge of American Trust Place at Michigan and Washington streets, said Carol Riewe, a local naturalist and raptor rehabilitator.

Riewe said the chicks, born in mid-May, still are dependent on their mother for food. Therefore, the missing
chick is at risk of dehydration and starvation as long as it's separated.    Sad

Anyone who spots the bird should call South Bend Animal Care and Control at 574-235-9303, city police at 574-235-9636 or Riewe at 574-339-7913.

Darn, it doesn't sound good for the young one.  Sad

Just read on twitter that there are two eggs and Unity is incubating.  The question was will the eggs hatch this late.  I was at fledge watch in Richmond VA in 2009 on Aug 22 and 23 watching the second clutch take flight.  If the eggs manage to hatch next week, 40 days later is Aug 25.  Yes, it gets cold erlier in Rochester than in Richmond.  Nothing is impossible.  There may be fledglings in Rochester yet!!  And they may even get a mild fall.

Anybody have an idea when hard incubation began?

Well, if that is Quest next to the box, is she OK? No movement!

Could be a shadow, we've been fooled before.

I don't see anyone there

I don't either.

One of the ladies (trumpetmom) on one of the panda blogs I frequent just posed this video link.  It's about two co-joined Robins she's found and caring for and is looking for a vet who may be able to separate them.  They are joined at the wing area.

I hope someone will come forward to try and separate them.

Events at the nest today: July 7th

As you will have been aware our osprey pair have not been incubating their eggs very much for a few days now.

This morning it looked like there were no eggs in the nest at all. After carefully scrutinising our 24 hour recordings we caught a very brief glimpse yesterday of one of the adult birds dropping material on top of the eggs. This was done so quickly we had to re-run the footage about six times to make sure we had observed correctly.

We therefore took the decision to send a qualified tree climbing staff member up the tree to investigate.

As we did not want to cause a lot of disturbance to the ospreys we timed our retrieval of the eggs when they were off the nest, after a bit of searching he found and retrieved the eggs from the nest.

The eggs will now be sent for analysis to see what we can find out from them. As soon as we have any definite news we will let you know.
