Very sad news to report about our girl in Richmond. She did fledge, but got confused by glass in some of the building windows.
Fly Free, Ginger.
I was just going to post this, Bonnie. Monday, June 20, 2011 Young Richmond falcon does not survive collision with building The story of the young Richmond peregrine falcon has unfortunately come to a premature end as the bird died from injuries resulting from a collision with a downtown building.
The young falcon was last seen on the Falcon Cam this morning at around 7:40. At 10:20, a DGIF biologist spotted the bird on a window ledge directly below the nest box on the Riverfront Plaza West Tower, approximately 15 ft below the box. Both adults were seen repeatedly circling the building in flight in an effort to encourage the young bird to fly. At 11:20, a flash of light from behind the window where the juvenile was perched spooked her off the window ledge. The bird took a strong, level flight northward, accompanied by her mother, and disappeared from sight behind a building.
The DGIF biologist was joined downtown by a dedicated volunteer at around noon. Before long, the volunteer spotted the young falcon perched on a building to the NE of the Riverfront Plaza towers. Following a brief preening session, the bird took a short flight and then circled back. It skittered some 20 ft down the glass facade of a nearby building, but was able to regain altitude. Unfortunately it then flew headlong into another glass building, the James River Tower Three, dropping straight down.
The young falcon was retrieved from the rooftop of an abutting building, where it landed approximately 10 stories below the collision point. The DGIF veterinarian arrived on the scene and confirmed that the bird was dead, citing head trauma from the collision as the cause and stating that the falcon likely died immediately upon impact with the building.
This unfortunate event represents the worst possible outcome that could be expected from this much anticipated fledging event, and underscores the need to monitor the progress that young urban falcons make as they leave the nest. We would like to thank all of the volunteers who have participated in the Fledge Watch this year, as well as all those folks who have followed the young falcon’s progress this year. Fly free, little one.

!!! Cinnamon Takes Flight! June 19, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre Linda Woods Reports: After taking over the watch from Zoe, and keeping an eye on William. I ventured up to the 43rd to have a birds eye view of the movements. Around 3:30p.m. Sunshine did a food exchange with Rhea Mae! At 6:15p.m., Keeping my eye on William and scanning the roof tops, I saw some movement on the upper level of 120 Adelaide St. At first I thought it was Sunshine, but saw that it was looking a little unsteady. A close look at the glowing red tape on the leg band confirmed it was Cinnamon! SURPRISE! Good landing. He wandered about that area, before settling down on the north west facing silver strut, where he laid down for the night. Kate had a good chow down and the entire nest ledge to herself for a short time, before Sunshine returned to the nest ledge.
William remained on the lower structure of the Sheraton Hotel, and that is where, hopefully he will be in the morning.
Good Luck Harry!

!!! William found June 19, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre Harry Crawford Reports: At 7:20am, I found Kate and Cinnamon on the nest ledge, visible from 120 Adelaide. A short time later, Sunshine appeared on the roof, just above the nest ledge. She hopped down to the ‘S’ and started to make her was over to the ‘t’ of Centre. Apparently, one of the adults had stashed prey there. Sunshine started to clean the prey! Feathers were going everywhere.
As much as I would have liked to stay and watch, this was an opportunity to go up to the 43rd floor of the hotel and see if I could spot our missing William. After checking a dozen or more roof tops, I found him on the south ledge of the lower level portion of the Sheraton Centre. I quickly went down to the courtyard south of the hotel and began watching. When Zoe arrived, she continued watching William while I went back to the front of 120 Adelaide to watch the nest ledge in case one of the remaining two fledged.
This could be an interesting and challenging day for Zoe and the afternoon crew.

Not sure how this is going to post, but Mike got a picture of Legs in his barn in West Virginia. Here is the report and link: Here's Legs!! (Kim Steininger was kind enough to forward the pic to me) http://www.peregrinefalcon-bcaw.net/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=719&start=340(photo credit: Three Rivers Avian Center, 06-16-11) I double-checked his leg band with some pics Kathy Clark forwarded from Tri-State last week, and it's definately him! Per the update Kim got, Legs is in a flight barn with 3 other NJ chicks from a Delaware River bridge site. Not sure when he will be transferred to the hack box, probably not too long I would guess. Way to go Legs!!! Legs is looking great, Bonnie! Really cute! Thanks for posting!

donna you can get your card by mail--never have to leave the computer
The only thing holding me up from renewing my passport is getting a new picture taken-I just never seem to get around to it DITTO!! I hate going to MV! Our local postoffice had passport day last year and we got everything done there in about 10 minutes for the 2 of us.I missed the one they held last year...I was in Rochester! Our post office does this regularly here in rochester. (All days except Mondays). So check with your post office. I think I downloaded the form and filled it out before I went and I got my pix taken at the local CVS. This was all thanks to Joyce, Kathy O and Carol who kept saying I needed to do this! So are you one of the people going to the banding in TO next week, Jeanne? I asked how people got to go but I guess no one is going to fess up how they got invited! Probably Carol P. knows.
