1.35 pm and unbanded female pays a visit, a daily ritual it seems depending on the weather.
What’s happened to RM & T? Well it's not unusual for them to be MIA in winter the past few years. My guess now is they are elsewhere together otherwise Stormin would be coming in with this girl and he's still respecting the territory lines. I know they were spotted down by Royal York hotel winter before last. And did you notice how RM didn't seem comfortable with the nest box last year..not sure why but something is putting them off the site - I thought it was the construction but that's done now. I'm just speculating of course but I can't see they both vanished - therefore they must be together somewhere. That's what I'm telling myself anyway. They might come back closer to egg laying when hormones start rising or they've found a new place? Is that the original box and gravel? Maybe they need replacing?

Lucie went to Burlington today and saw the nest site there where DC's brother Mac is. After we got chatting we realized that in addition to Mac being Cadence and Aria's uncle, his new mate Jo is their cousin via Beauty's side. She is Nick and Hathor's daughter. Too funny!
How cool is that!

This one is for you Alison as I read your history on her parents over on another forum so I think you will appreciate the heads up on this one. Long story short, a story about an almost 18 year old peregrine being found and injured came up on my feed this morning. She is 'Buffy - daughter of Calypso and George (grand daughter of the legendary Zenith and Buckeye). She has been up until now the resident female at St. Mary's Cement in Bowmanville. Pete Read - who was involved with the London, Ontario nest site where she was born had a great story to tell of the nest that year and the sad losses - it's in the comments and I've posted the link here for you to have a look as there are photos of her there as well. Here is the original post that alerted me to Buffy: Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Shades-of-Hope-Wildlife-Refuge-477706698958714/?hc_ref=ARRa-zfxLcO6rJggsAjLt4xXbkR7454YYFP3XLu8k1ZeJzrW2XoaeRlofNbK-S0_r7IA TALE OF SURVIVAL Peregrine Falcons are fierce raptors found on all continents in the world ... except Antarctica! But, in the 1950's and 60's the species was on the verge of extinction in North America as DDT poisoned the food chain. Worldwide concern led to recovery efforts that resulted in a return of healthy populations. Still on the list of Species at Risk, these magnificent birds are monitored throughout America.
Found in a parking lot in Clarington, caring rescuers phoned for help! This bird was rushed to SOH where she is currently in care. With a band on her leg, her history was revealed. Born in London, Ontario she is 17+ years old. Her wing has been pinned, but prognosis is guarded. Thanks for posting, Carly..great story! I hope she survives this ordeal!

I was very sad to read this news about Pilialoha from the Cornell site, especially to have lost her in this way. December 19, 2017Sad News About Pilialoha
We’re saddened to share news that Pilialoha, one of the mothers of the young albatross Kalama during the 2017 cam season, died after an interaction with a Hawaii-permitted Deep Set longline vessel while she was foraging over the Pacific Ocean. Her death was reported by a trained National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) fisheries observer. In recent years, fishing vessels in the North American fleets have made important strides in reducing seabird mortality from bycatch thanks to research and new safety techniques promoted by the NMFS Office of Sustainable Fisheries. These new measures are effective 90% of the time when ships use streamers to scare birds away from hooks, weight lines so they sink faster, and bait hooks at night when birds are less active.
However, even when vessels take precautions some seabirds are still killed. About 100 Laysan Albatrosses die from bycatch each year, down from a high of around 30,000 before driftnets were banned and longline safety measures taken. Research continues on the best ways to reduce that number—including a recent workshop in November involving multiple agencies and scientists. Seabirds who die as a result of interactions with fishing vessels (including Pilialoha) are also collected to provide valuable population-level information on demographics, distribution patterns, food habits, and pollution loads, with the hope of improving prospects for albatrosses and other seabirds in the future.
Although it’s sad to learn that Mahealani’s partner from last year will not return, there’s a good likelihood that she will find a new mate in future years and continue to be a productive member of the albatross breeding population on Kauai. As we say farewell to Pilialoha and look ahead to the next breeding season on Kauai, we encourage you to remember the best times of these past few years and also to treasure the time on cam that we get with these amazing birds. Thanks for watching—we hope to be back online sometime in mid- to late-January.Such a tragic loss, after she and her partner had a very successful season raising Kalama.

Anyone care to make a prediction as to when courting will start at the Times Square Building nest in 2018?
I’m hoping they return to TS again for the 2018 season! I had saved this pic from 2/1/17...that’s my guess!

WoodmenLife It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Charity, our female falcon nesting at the WoodmenLife Tower, has died after a collision. Charity arrived in 2015 and mated with Mintaka, our male falcon. The falcon cam last spotted a bird 11 days ago. It is believed that Mintaka is searching for a new mate. We will know for sure if Mintaka has chosen to keep the WoodmenLife Tower as his home if he returns with his new mate by late February or early March to make their new nest. See how this story unfolds at falcons.woodmenlife.org in the coming months. I’ve watched this nest for years and was so sad to read of the loss of Charity. I do hope Mintaka finds a new mate and returns to this nest site in the future. Fly free, Charity..you’ll be missed.
