Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Seneca Sighted at Brookpark Road Bridge with a Mate!

Posted by Chad & Chris on CMNH forum. Perhaps a reason we never heard from Seneca again."GG has been less consistently around the bridge over the last few days when we've checked, but was there with a full crop this evening. We can't tell if the two eggs are still up there-- they aren't in view if they are. The news on Cheyenne is good-- he's responding very well to the antibiotics and his defecation is back to normal. He's eating well and is energetic again, per Laura. The blood panel ruled out a rodenticide, but the poison that was in his system is still unknown. Laura feels that if he continues to recover as well as he has he should be releaseable within a couple weeks. Joyce-- you're right that the nest area makes them vulnerable. DOW really did want to get a nest tray into that cubby, but it was a conflict with the airport. We didn't get around to posting this, but we found out that they had been trapping and relocating raptors at the airport in an effort to prevent airplane/bird strikes. No way of knowing, but it could even explain how Seneca disappeared at such an odd time. They were transporting trapped peregrines all the way to Toledo (over 100 miles away). Laura met with airport officials and there is now an agreement in place that all trapped birds from the airport will be assessed (and identified, if banded) at the MRC. The resident peregrines would not be relocated if they get trapped. However, it was after that meeting that Cheyenne was transported out to Back to the Wild, so hopefully the protocol will work more efficiently in the future."

Margaret - you will probably know about the cams sooner than us. Keep monitoring the CPF site and we'll count on you to help keep us all informed.
Just to put things in perspective...Even though we stay in touch with CPF, now is the time we minimize contact (as they have asked) because they are so swamped with so many sites to monitor. They only have a slim few to handle all of the sites, and both gas and phone calls are costly. Calls between US and CAN are very expensive especially with roaming charges on cell phones. I can tell you from personal experience on our last Quest trip, that a one-day connection for my computer on roaming charges ran up a bill just slightly under $5,000. A very costly mistake, as we watched our nestbox while in Toronto.
CPF staff put in a lot of time and even their own funds to keep things going. Donations and contributions are virtually nonexistent during the summer months because there are no school visit programs, which sustain them through the winter months. CPF is a labor of love, and a volunteer effort on everyone's part up there.
We may touch base by email. but we don't always hear back right away. When Big Frank has the time, he keeps us posted on the forum, and maybe he can let us know when cams are put in place.

Mark - I'm sure it happened so fast, but did this falcon look like an adult to you?
Perhaps this was the same falcon that Archer battled with yesterday at Kodak Park? Carol P witnessed it later in the afternoon as well, and Dana said it was an adult falcon.
I give Archer a lot of credit keeping up with both sites, but I am afraid these battles could dwindle his strength and take its toll on him. I don't know much about this. Can anyone enlighten?

What is it with Canadian males servicing two females????
Joyce
Checked on his background on the site and Rueben is/was an American born tiercel. Maybe it's the Canadian beer The male at this nest site is named Rueben, and he is from the nest site at the Busch agricultural complex in Manitowoc, Manitowoc Country, Wisconsin. He was banded on May 9th, 2003, and has a black-over-green band on his left leg
That's too funny. Here I am accusing Reuben of being Canadian. Canadian beer...Busch Complex. Must be some connection. So once the male is confirmed, we might have a US pair residing in Scarborough.

Ei - Linn was at Scarborogh-Bell in 2009. At that time, CPF thought that Reuben might be “servicing” two diferent females at two different nest sites. Lawrie was at Yellow Pages. Maybe Linn bided her time and has now paired with Reuben. I haven't checked to see how far apart Bell and Yellow Pages are. What is it with Canadian males servicing two females???? Joyce

Some of you were wondering...where is Linn? This was posted a few minutes ago on the Canadian Peregrine Foundation website...!!! Yellow Pages Has Four Eggs!!May 05, 2011 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages Tracy Simpson Reports: This afternoon, Marion and I took a trip up to the Yellow Pages nest to try and confirm the what and the where of the matter and had quite an exciting experience. We walked the circumference of the building roof, fully expecting an exuberant adult to come charging in and yet managed to walk around and check each of the ledges without any interference… …yet. After seeing no adults and not one egg, we went for round two of the roof and to our delight were greeted by the adult female on the north side of the building. Given her presence, vocalizations and swoops at us we knew that we must be close. Another check of the northern ledges and we finally located the male on 4 eggs!! He had squished himself into the corner of the ledge, a ledge which has ample room by the way, so that all that could be seen was his tail and wing tips. He was all snuggled in there and sound asleep until the female sent up the alarm. I was able to take lots of pictures of both resident adults and we have identified the female as Linn, a 2007 hatch from Rochester, New York. We cannot confirm the identity of the male as of yet but it is suspected to be Rueben. We will certainly be watching this site for a hatch and a confirmation on the resident male. I will post pictures from today once I have had a chance to resize them so check back soon!! http://www.peregrine-foundation.ca/w/c/sightings/scarborough-yellow-pages/WAY TO GO LINN! Joyce

Hi everyone! Carol P, Kathy O, MAK, and myself still on watch at Harlequin. We are hoping Quest will lay one more egg. If she stays on schedule, they think it will be this afternoon.
As Frank mentioned, Quest was on her eggs. Once in a while she would stand up and turn around...still only 2. Quest wasn't letting Kendal on the eggs today. We don't know for sure if she is in full incubating mode yet. Kendal came in for a visit to the nest tray. He chased a Canadian goose away from the area and then flew in front of the Harlequin building below us.
It's raining pretty hard right now. We are all taking pictures through the windows, so they aren't as clear as we would like, but will try to share some later.
Joyce
